Tigers 2022 Off Season for FA signings, trades, tender, nontender, Rule 5, to 2023

SATURDAY SURVEY.

New Detroit Tiger PoBO Scott Harris announced this week that he is willing to consider all options in an attempt to improve the team. His resources would include using the waiver wire, trades and free agent signings. When asked about trading young talent, like pitching, he said he would consider it.

It is presumed that Riley Greene is the only young player who is untouchable. But what about the young starting pitching? Many of whom were acquired from the team?s tanking strategy. Should they be traded in order to bring in multiple MLB-ready players? Or should they remain and become the nucleus of the starting rotation under Chris Fetter and Robin Lund?

What do you think?

Should the Tigers consider trading top prospects in order to improve?

1. Yes, trade them.

2. No, keep them.

If I were Harris, I wouldn't trade a single one of the "high end" prospects until I get a year with them to see what they really are. If the developmental system is as bad as everyone says it is, maybe these players aren't as bad as their numbers say they are and Harris would be selling low on all of them.

For players who haven't had ML time yet I wouldn't care if they were traded for a good player assuming the player isn't 34-35 years old.

But keep Jackson Jobe (Unless you can a good established young player back, like a 23 year old). Jace Jung (See Jobe), Spencer Torkelson, Casey Mize, Matt Manning, Riley Greene, Tarik Skubal. Everyone else I don't care for.

Edit: Maybe stay away from trading anyone from the '22 class. See them get a full minor league season in.

The following Tigers minor leaguers have elected free agency:

RHP Zac Houston
RHP Elvin Rodriguez
RHP Bubba Derby
RHP Gerson Moreno
RHP Markus Solbach
RHP Cody Sedlock
RHP J.T. Hintzen
RHP Luis Castillo
RHP Shea Spitzbarth
RHP Nick Vincent
RHP Nolan Blackwood
RHP Joe Navilhon

When was the last time the Detroit Tigers DFA'd so many players? 18 so far (mostly minor league) with all of them going for free agency.

It shows Scott Harris is really taking charge in turning over this roster.
It also clearly demonstrates just how poor his predecessor's talent evaluation was.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.

In a matter of days, MLB teams must submit contract offers to their players who qualify. It has been widely rumored that the Tigers will non-tender Jeimer Candelario.

He earned $5.8 mill this past year for arguably his worst performance to date and production simply did not come close to matching his salary. He is also known to be unreliable in performance from year to year. If his case were to go to arbitration, he would be expected to receive $7 mill.

In 2022, he hit .217 and a ? 1 Defensive Run Saved (DRS). However, he is a switch hitter and his fWAR was 3.9 back in 2021. Compare that with the current free agent 3Bers who each have a 2 fWAR.

Finding a better solution via free agency may be tough. But potentially the team could try to trade for one. There are currently no options in the farm system.

Several days ago, Scott Harris grabbed Andy Ibanez from the Rangers who has played more third base than any other position. He has the offensive habits ? great plate discipline, few strikeouts, etc. ? that Harris desires. He is also showing that he can consistently handle the defensive part of the game.

The Tigers may also non-tender Candelario and then try to re-sign him at a lower price. It is believed that his real value is around $3 mill. It would be half his current salary and may not be a feasible option for Jeimer.

What should the Tigers do about Candelario? Try to keep him or allow him to walk?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

How should the Tigers handle the 3B position for 2023?

1. Keep Candelario.

2. Find another solution.

The roster revision for the Detroit Tigers will continue next week. Last week, they had to reinstate 10 players from the 60-day IL and thus had to remove the same number of active players.

On Tuesday, more clearing will take place in order to protect certain players from the Rule 5 draft.

Three days later, on the 18th, there's the non-tender deadline. Contracts must be offered to eligible players. Those not receiving them will be "non-tendered" and become free agents. Expect the purge to continue.

The Detroit Tigers have hired 3, count 'em, 3 MLB hitting coaches. It would appear that they are serious about correcting the hitting woes.

Brdar appears to have connections to Scott Harris, Chris Fetter, A. J. Hinch and Scott Bream. His background is with the Padres, Giants and U-M.

Beauregard comes from the Dodgers. Presumably connected to all the Dodgers the Tigers recently hired.

Rowson's background is with the Marlins, Twins, Yankees and Cubs.

The Nationals have signed outfielder Derek Hill to a minors deal with an invite to spring training. A former first-round pick by the Tigers, Hill finished last season with the Mariners after Seattle claimed him off waivers in August.
