Tigers Announce Several Roster Moves.
MLBTR

The Tigers announced several roster moves in advance of tonight?s Rule 5 protection deadline.

Five players have been added to the 40-man roster: right-handers Reese Olson and Brendan White, infielders Andre Lipcius and Wenceel Perez, as well as outfielder Parker Meadows.

In corresponding moves, they designated righties Miguel Diaz and Kyle Funkhouser, catcher Michael Papierski and outfielder Brendon Davis for assignment.

Lefty Sean Guenther cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Toledo.

Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you back in actual offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s topic??..

MLB teams had until 6 PM yesterday to protect players from the Rule 5 draft that takes place on December 7th.

Under former GM Al Avila, the Tigers made use of the draft to fill their major league roster. Because of the lockout, last year?s draft was cancelled.

The last selection by the Tigers was Akil Baddoo. Previously, the team had selected Victor Reyes who was just recently cut by the team.

In previous years, Detroit has selected Rony Garcia, Daniel Stumpf, Kyle Lobstein and Chris Shelton.

The Rule 5 draft was developed before the official draft process was created.
It is still seen as a venue for teams to grab a player who was buried on another roster.

However, any player selected costs a team only $100,000 with the rule that this player must stay on the MLB-level roster for a full year or be returned to the original team.

But do the rewards of a Rule 5 selection outweigh the costs?

Are the players the Tigers have gotten worth the effort when you consider that they must protect their own players from the same draft? That they often have to make tough decisions about whom to protect?

Is the Rule 5 Draft still a viable resource or does it only benefit certain levels of organizations?
Should the system remain?

Should the Rule 5 draft remain?

1. Yes, keep it.

2. No, it doesn't offer enough value.

The rule 5 draft is great. It allows some players buried in a really deep farm system to get a chance to play at the ML level (along with the paycheck).

Which Tigers could be on the roster bubble?
Tigers official site

Once, Jeimer Candelario and Willi Castro were young trade acquisitions who were key parts of the Tigers? youth movement that general manager Al Avila was putting together. Four years later, they?re among the first decisions that Scott Harris has to make as Detroit?s president of baseball operations weighs how to get the team headed in the right direction again.

Rebuilds stall, but player service time doesn?t. And as the Tigers weigh their list of arbitration-eligible players ahead of Friday?s deadline to tender contracts, their decisions include several players who have been key parts of their rebuild efforts.

Nine Tigers are eligible for arbitration: Tyler Alexander, Candelario, Harold Castro, Willi Castro, Jos? Cisnero, Rony Garc?a , Joe Jim?nez, Austin Meadows and Gregory Soto. Two other arbitration-eligible players, Miguel Diaz and Kyle Funkhouser, were designated for assignment on Tuesday. Another arbitration-eligible player, Victor Reyes, was outrighted last week and is now a free agent. Detroit could do the same with others by simply not offering them a contract by Friday?s deadline.

Most of those contract decisions are easy, but what the Tigers do with three key players could say a lot about how much change is coming:

Woodward Tigers Podcast Episode 036: The Detroit Tigers new 40-man roster...for now. 54 minutes.

The Detroit Tigers have set their 40-man roster as they protected Parker Meadows, Reese Olson, Wenceel Perez, Brandon White and Andre Lipcius.
The guys breakdown what skills stand out about each player and why they are good additions to the roster.

From there, the guys discuss the newest coaches that were hired on the coaching staff.

Tomorrow is another big deadline day for MLB and the Detroit Tigers. It is tender/non-tender day where offers for next season are made - or not.

It will give us more clues about PoBO Scott Harris' strategy for the roster. There are rumors about certain players who will be non-tendered. Anyone who fails to get a contract is an immediate free agent.

Will the Tigers tender Jeimer Candelario? They will need to determine if they can find a decent 3rd baseman in a market where there are very few. If Jeimer is non-tendered, then it tells us the Tigers will be shopping for a replacement. There is no one currently ready in the minors.
