WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers
Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.
Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you back in actual offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom ? as you talk to your co-workers.
Here is today?s topic??..
MLB teams had until 6 PM yesterday to protect players from the Rule 5 draft that takes place on December 7th.
Under former GM Al Avila, the Tigers made use of the draft to fill their major league roster. Because of the lockout, last year?s draft was cancelled.
The last selection by the Tigers was Akil Baddoo. Previously, the team had selected Victor Reyes who was just recently cut by the team.
In previous years, Detroit has selected Rony Garcia, Daniel Stumpf, Kyle Lobstein and Chris Shelton.
The Rule 5 draft was developed before the official draft process was created.
It is still seen as a venue for teams to grab a player who was buried on another roster.
However, any player selected costs a team only $100,000 with the rule that this player must stay on the MLB-level roster for a full year or be returned to the original team.
But do the rewards of a Rule 5 selection outweigh the costs?
Are the players the Tigers have gotten worth the effort when you consider that they must protect their own players from the same draft? That they often have to make tough decisions about whom to protect?
Is the Rule 5 Draft still a viable resource or does it only benefit certain levels of organizations?
Should the system remain?
Should the Rule 5 draft remain?
1. Yes, keep it.
2. No, it doesn't offer enough value.
