Tigers decline to tender contracts to Jeimer Candelario, Willi Castro, and Harold Castro.
Not huge surprises, but clear signs that Scott Harris intends on a thorough roster makeover this offseason.

They waited until the last minute, but in the end the Detroit Tigers declined to tender contracts to several of their veteran players at Friday evening?s 8:00 p.m. ET non-tender deadline. 3B Jeimer Candelario, UT Willi Castro, and INF Harold Castro joined RHP Kyle Funkhouser as the most notable cuts from the roster.

Earlier in the day, the Tigers did announce that LHP Tyler Alexander had signed a one-year contract for $1.875 million. RHP Jose Cisnero, OF Austin Meadows, RHP Joe Jim?nez, LHP Gregory Soto, and RHP Rony Garcia have all been tendered a contract.

Individually, none of today?s moves are particularly surprising. What may surprise some is the fact that all three of Candelario and the non-related Castros were non-tendered.

Candelario was due some $7.0 million in his final year of arbitration after a brutal 2022 campaign that made his apparent 2020-2021 breakout a distant memory for many. Candelario came to Detroit in the deal that sent reliever Justin Wilson and catcher Alex Avila to the Chicago Cubs at the 2017 trade deadline. He?s posted several good seasons offensively, but the inconsistency, mediocre defensive play, and growing expense, made his situation rather precarious. He shouldn?t have much trouble getting a look from another team. Meanwhile, the Tigers don?t have a lot of obvious plug-and-play options available at third base in free agency, so we?ll see if Harris has a creative solution in mind.

The Detroit Tigers tendered contracts to six arbitration-eligible players for the 2023 season: Austin Meadows, Gregory Soto, Joe Jim?nez, Jos? Cisnero, Tyler Alexander and Rony Garc?a.

Third baseman Jeimer Candelario, infielder Harold Castro and utility player Willi Castro were non-tendered and officially became free agents at Friday's 8 p.m. tender deadline. Earlier this offseason, the Tigers cut ties with four arbitration-eligible players: right-hander Drew Hutchison, outfielder Victor Reyes, righty reliever Miguel D?az and righty reliever Kyle Funkhouser.

The Tigers, led by new president of baseball operations Scott Harris, started the offseason with 13 arbitration-eligible players. The Tigers' 40-man roster is currently at 38 players.

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

For the first time in 20 years, the Tigers have new leadership who all appear to be modern employees and possess the most advanced tools.

Given this, we can expect them to do things differently as they rebuild this team and set competitive goals.

There are a number of ways to build a top team. Through home grown talent, filling every position with solid talent and yes, even buying some of it.

Under Mike Ilitch, the Tigers had very little homegrown talent other than Justin Verlander and Nick Castellanos. He resorted to buying a roster and added multiple stars to the Tigers? dugout.

These players created much excitement for fans, but none of them were able to accomplish the goal of hoisting a flag over Comerica. And in the end, every single one of these long-term expensive contracts played out terribly and helped fuel the horrible tear down.

As the Tigers move forward, and hopefully become competitive once again, should they consider ? when the time is right ? returning to the strategy of adding 1 or 2 stars to long-term, expensive contracts once again?

Will the move be worth it or will the price create too much pain in the end?

Or should they focus on creating a sustainable team that regularly feeds talent up through the pipeline? Players who are younger but still highly talented? But also players who do not yet have that high-profile star status attached to them.

Is it better for payroll to be spread out throughout the roster or is it OK for a nice chunk of it to be concentrated on 1-2 players?

Should the Tigers ever consider a return to signing star players to long-term expensive contracts?

1. Yes, when the time is right.

2. No, focus on creating a pipeline of homegrown players.

I'm still in wait and see mode. Just because he makes moves doesn't mean he knows what he is doing.

The fact that all 3 of those guys got 1000+ plate appearances for this franchise means anyone is better than the last guy.

I liked hitting Harold but not as an everyday guy. If he was better on D he would be a nice bench warmer. Sad there was only 2 players on the team with a better OWar.

Kind of amazing some of the players from the lowest points of the Tigers rebuild lasted as long as they did.

Harold Castro: 1,215 PA, 15 HR, 3.7 BB%, -1.0 fWAR

Willi Castro: 1,092, 24 HR, 4.7 BB%, 1.6 fWAR

Victor Reyes: 1,280 PA, 16 HR, 3.8 BB%, 0.6 fWAR

Austin Meadows gets $4.3 million and incentives for the 2023 season.
He agreed to a one-year contract with the #Tigers, avoiding arbitration.

Meadows made $4 million in 2022 and is under team control through 2024.
He played 36 games last season.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

Friday night was the deadline for teams to either tender or non-tender players for the 2023 season.

For players not receiving a contract offer, they became automatic free agents.

Out of 9 eligible players, the Tigers non-tendered 3 of them ? Jeimer Candelario and both Harold and Willi Castro. Candelario in particular had his worst year to date both offensively and defensively and would have earned app. $7 mill in arbitration. After Miguel Cabrera, Candelario was the 2nd longest tenured member of the roster.

All 3 were high strikeout/low walk hitters and defensively they were below-average. PoBO Scott Harris has now said several times that players would need to possess certain skills in order to stay on the roster. These guys didn?t make the cut.

There were 6 other players who were tendered contracts ? Tyler Alexander, Jose Cisnero, Rony Garcia, Joe Jimenez, Austin Meadows and Gregory Soto. All but 1 are pitchers.

However, offering contracts to these 6 does not guarantee roster spots. Potentially, the Tigers may try to trade 1 or more of them. Signing them to contracts is one way to ensure other teams don?t grab them for nothing and instead, the Tigers can use them as trade bait.

Give this information, how do you feel about what was done or not done by yesterday?s deadline?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts.
Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

What do you think of the Tigers' tender/non-tender decisions?

1. A solid move towards improving the roster.

2. Agree with approximately half of the decisions.

1. Don't agree with most of the decisions.
