What? and let him chase 2 feet off the outside corner, and make up his mind to swing before the pitcher throws it?

I know it doesn't seem to make too much sense, but when a guy is 31 and is already entrenched in his habits, it may be better to just let him do what he has been doing for the past 20+ years vs. trying to change him.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.

Scott Harris has a reputation of using the waiver wire to improve teams.

For the Tigers, his strategy was to strengthen the roster throughout the year as well as build depth in the minors that would be used to help mitigate the problems caused by injuries to the MLB roster.

Players put on waivers can vary. For top teams rich in their minor league prospects, it can be a goldmine for teams looking to improve. They often have too many good players that hard choices must be made about releasing some of them.

Harris made at least 10 waiver wire selections in his first year. Several of them were placed in Detroit. Tyler Holton who performed exceptionally well and garnered rookie of the year buzz and Andy Ibanez with some solid offense and defense. He hit .311 the last 2 months of the season while walking quite a bit and striking out little. He is expected to play 2B and some 3B this coming season.

In addition to them, Harris added a catcher, 2Ber and SS to the minors. He also brought in 4 LHPs and 2 RHPs. Many of them saw action in Detroit during double headers and filled in for players on the IL.

How important do you feel the waiver wire is for Detroit as they attempt to add talent and build depth?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can also respond to other readers.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.

37...not a lot of room for additions. They need to add 2 starting pitchers, at a minimum. I'm sure that their bull pen is not complete either, but they can probably fill that from players on the 40 man.

I would not expect anyone top notch or near top notch as a FA for us. 1 year prove deals most likely or a 2 year 5m aav type. It was obvious the Tigers weren't going to use the cash saved by Miggy retiring. They are overpaying for Canha but it's only for 1 year so no big deal.

Our SP group is probably going to consist of the guys already under contract.

It appears that there was much more going on in the background last year between the Detroit Tigers and now non-tendered Spencer Turnbull.

But Turnbull asked to be traded last summer. No takers. Then Harris tried to unload him before the recent non-tender deadline. Again, no takers which is why he ended up not being offered a contract.

In the end, it appears that the Tigers felt there was too much animosity, drama and upkeep to try to see if Spencer could regain some value so he could be traded. A logical choice as they need to focus on current players and to keep negative energy out of the clubhouse.

Tigers is right-hander Spencer Turnbull. Per Scott Harris president of baseball operations, the Tigers tried to trade Turnbull ahead of Friday?s non-tender deadline but were unable to find any takers.

The decision to non-tender Turnbull, comes after a long-running saga of issues between the club?s decision to option Turnbull to Triple-A back in May (a move that was later rescinded due to an at-the-time undisclosed neck injury) and subsequent decision to option him a second time in August while he was working his way back from the neck injury and subsequent toe issue.

Tensions between the sides got to the point that Turnbull requested a trade ahead of the trade deadline on August 1 this past summer, though of course no deal wound up occurring back then. Now a free agent, Turnbull figures to be among the more interesting rebound candidates on the rotation market this offseason, given his flashes of success from 2020-21 when he posted a 3.46 ERA and 3.24 FIP across 20 starts.

I kind of wondered why the Tigers picked up the option on Kelly.

There is no other catcher in the system other than Dingler and he isn't ready.
I won't be surprised if something happens between now and the middle of 2024 for another catcher.

I really doubt any team would pick him up. There is no way he could survive a full year on a teams roster.

It's possible he could be a late bloomer at age 24 or 25, but it seems doubtful a team would carry, him at his age and where he sits in the minors.
