Tigers part ways with longtime pitcher amid flurry of roster moves.

The Detroit Tigers cut longtime left-handed pitcher Tyler Alexander amid a flurry of moves ahead of Monday afternoon?s deadline to set the 40-man roster.

Alexander has been in the Tigers? organization since he was drafted in the second round in 2015. The Tigers will have to trade Alexander or place him on waivers. If he goes unclaimed by other teams, he can elect free agency.

In other moves, the Tigers:

* Waived infielder Zack Short, who was claimed by the New York Mets.

* Waived relievers Trey Wingenter and Andrew Vasquez. They were outrighted to Triple-A Toledo and can elect free agency.

* Formally exercised club options on catcher Carson Kelly and outfielder Mark Canha.

* Reinstated right-handed pitchers Casey Mize and Freddy Pacheco; and outfielders Riley Greene and Austin Meadows from the 60-day injured list.

* Selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Keider Montero, adding him to the 40-man roster.

Alexander, 29, made his Tigers? debut in 2019 and split time between the rotation and the bullpen over the next five seasons.

He went 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA in 2023, striking out 44 and walking just five. His season ended in July when he went on the injured list with a shoulder/lat strain.

Alexander had just been named the Tigers? pitcher of the month for June after he posted a 0.96 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings.

In 120 career appearances (including 43 starts) he has a 4.38 ERA over 341 1/3 innings.

If he?s healthy, Alexander should receive plenty of interest either on waivers or on the free-agent market.

The Yankees have offered hitting coach job to James Rowson.
If the Tigers lose James Rowson,

Triple-A Toledo manager Anthony Iapoce could be a candidate to replace him on the coaching staff. Iapoce previously worked as the hitting coach/coordinator with the Rangers, Cubs and Red Sox.

Hearing more and more that Rowson will take the job. As for a replacement, it is logical to think that AAA's manager, Anthony Iapoce, will get the nod. He's known as a "hitting guru" and has an extensive background in coaching hitting.

For years, the Detroit Tigers had coaches no one else wanted to hire. Now they have top coaches and other teams want to poach them. Neither situation makes Tiger fans happy.

WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.

Over the weekend, the Detroit Tigers traded for outfielder Mark Canha. In return, they sent Blake Holub, a AA relief pitcher, to the Brewers.

Yesterday, I detailed the reasons why the Tigers added Canha. For reference, as you consider your vote, you may review the info here:

Canha joins a crowded outfield where he is expected to play regularly. He is different in almost every way from the others who roam Comerica National Park. It is also believed that several current outfielders (including Austin Meadows) will be cut and/or traded to make room for him.

What do you think about this trade?

How would you rate the Canha trade?

1. Very solid trade.

2. It appears to have some potential.

3. Disappointing.

Tigers hire former Mets third base coach Joey Cora to coaching staff.

Hearing the Tigers plan to move third base coach Gary Jones into the dugout, which opens a spot for Joey Cora as the third base coach.

First base coach still needed, could be an internal hire. Gabe Alvarez, runner-up to Cora, expected to return to Double-A Erie.
