Tigers and MLB 2018 offseason

Rooting for Brock Deatherage to make it to the big club in '20.

b/c he has a cool surname that could be the name of a heavy metal band.

I've never been one to buy authentic sports jerseys or shirts, but I would seriously consider buying his.

Tigers are gonna be a mid-market ballclub, with a small-market payroll under the Ilitches from now on, IMO. The days of star, much less superstar FA signings died with Mr. I.

There will be Miggy and Zimmerman (b/c untradeable) then a precipitous dropoff in salary for the remainder of their teams

well, they are in a mid-sized market, so it makes sense that they would spend like a mid-market team.

They don't have to spend high. Just look at the Dodgers they haven't won a WS in forever. Mid markets with mid market caps win all the time.

yes, it can happen, but not as common as the big market teams winning.

Over the past 20 years, only 4 mid or small market teams have won.

St Louis, Diamondbacks, Marlins & KC

And St. Louis won multiple times. Same with Florida.

STL has only had 3 seasons in the past 21 when they were under .500 (73 and 78 wins)

DET 12
Hou 8

What came first? The attendance or the winning? Because they are not mutually equal or correlated.

fans are very predictable. They come if the team is good. When they suck, fewer fans show up to games. It's not rocket science.

Yet you have no proof. It is just conjecture on your part. And one team it might be true. And another it could be false. Hence no correlation.

Outside of the NYY, the STL Cards have been the most successful franchise overall in MLB history. If a franchise is going to try to win with a lower team payroll than its market share indicates that it is capable of sustaining, then its scouting staff, MiLB coaching, trades, and draft picks have to be successful more often than not.

Cleveland saw a huge jump in attendance during the 90s, with a new ballpark and contending teams, but like the Tigers were in the first half of this decade, they failed to win a WS championship. But their attendance has slumped in the 21st century, even when fielding contending teams. The cost to attend a game has soared, as has the cost of living for those of modest means. So although they may still be avid fans, the amount of games that they can budget to attend has dropped. Why go to a game anyway, when we can watch in HDTV and surround sound from the cheaper climate-controlled comfort and convenience of a Lazyboy or sofa?
