Tigers' Gardenhire: Let's worry about a contract extension at end of season, not now.

Gardenhire is done end of 2020. With Leyland running this shit show from the background, watch them bring Don Kelly in as the manager in 2021.
The Detroit and PittsburghShitsburgh connection.

The Tigers are one of the teams interested in Travis Shaw. Shaw was non-tendered by the Brewers last week, as Shaw?s disastrous 2019 season left Milwaukee wary of paying the infielder a projected $4.7MM arbitration salary.
In 2017-18, however, Shaw hit .258/.347/.497 with 63 homers over 1193 PA for the Brew Crew, so he could be an intriguing buy-low candidate for several clubs. In particular, a rebuilding team like Detroit could certainly see the rebound potential in Shaw, who can play either corner infield position and also has experience at second base.

Tigers GM Al Avila provided reporters (including MLB.com?s Jason Beck) with an update on right-hander Michael Fulmer, who is ?on track? in his recovery from Tommy John surgery and ?should be able to pitch in games sometime in July.? Fulmer underwent his procedure last March, so a July return would be slightly beyond the normal 12-15 month timeframe for TJ patients, though not by any unusual amount.

I think what he says makes sense.

Had opportunities for several players for a little more than what they plan to spend, Villar, mazara, hernandez, but will sign 2 million dollar players instead of the 5 to 10 million. You need to remember that Detnews, Freep, and Mlive Tigers beat writers with the exception of Fenech, and occasionally Paul are Not in Ilitch and Avila's back pocket. The rest of them write what Avila wants for a spin to keep the fans interested.

what we don't know is if they had some conversations with some of those players / agents, but they didn't want to sign with the Tigers. Also, I'm OK with not signing any of the $5-$10M players right now (how'd that work out last year with Tyson Ross and JOrdy Mercer?). The Tigers aren't even close to competing and won't be for a while. I'd rather they be really shitty for another year and try to get that #1 pick again vs. just putting on some band-aids and still losing 95 games.

I think next year is the year they should dip their toes in FA, but not high end guys. Zimmerman will be gone and some of the pitchers should be ready to contribute.

That's just my opinion.

Every time I read tigers interested in this guy or that guy the first thing I think is meh, yeah but are those guys interested in coming to Detroit to play on a crap last place team going nowhere? Probably not.

Tigers kick the tires on X
Agent to Player: Tigers interested
Player to Agent: Oh Hell F'kin NO! who else?

Tom and TM,
All I am saying is I believe very little of what Avila and the Tigers beat reporters for the 3 news feeds have to say. The writers for the most part do what the Tigers tell them or they have issues with CI and Avila. See Fenech and Paul with how they are treated by front office.

You guys could very well be correct in your assumptions, maybe I am also, all to a degree.

One thing I think we all can agree with is that Avila is not a respected GM by the other teams GM's and right from the get go, 3 years back he has hesitated in dealing players which cost them in getting better players in return, and also he got rid of said players because Ilitch wanted to dump payroll. First it's a reboot, then a rebuild.

Looks like a clusterfuck with the Red Wings too, although Yzerman's track record as GM/Pres at his previous team shows promise, most likely sooner than the Tigers.

Last year we tanked pure and simple. They could have gotten better players without lifting the payroll too much. They refused to do so. Another Avila screw up after '16 we got nothing for our traded stars. Can't blame anyone but him. Nothing for JV, nothing for Upton, nothing for Nicky C, JD and further back nothing for Price, nothing for Cespedes I'm sure I'm missing someone.

Not even close to a decent player. We got the wrong guy. We got the wrong guy.
