Tigers vs. mariners Game Thread September 17

Coke and Alburquerque warming up.

Tums, check.
Vomit bag, check.

As far as those numbers go, I get the point you're trying to make but I think it depends on how you interpret it. Iggy's infield hit % could be higher because Ichiro had more clear cut hits to the outfield. I'd like to see totals and not percentages. Would paint a clearer picture, whether it supports your argument or others.

The real problem is Ichiro was a left handed slap hitter who was halfway out of the box before he made contact with the ball.

There is really no comparison to be made between him and Iggy.

Question. If Miggy heats up again and we clinch within the week, do we still rest him and risk him being rusty again? I say we still start him and let him get 2 AB's per game and leave after the 4th or 5th inning.

I don't think I could argue with your suggestion or someone that wanted to bench him until the Miami games to get him back in the swing of things. I think the only thing I'd be against is business as usual and playing him regularly.

In his career, 23.3% of Ichiro's hits have been infield hits. So far this season, 34.3% of Jose Iglesias' hits have been infield hits. If you guys think it's going to continue, then the jokes on you. BTW, Ichiro is the best infield hitter since they started tracking the stat.

Ichiro = 20.3% Career (13.7% via bunt) (29.9% in 2010)

B. Garnder = 23.8% Career (25.2% via bunt) (33.3% in 2011)

Iggy = 33.6% Career (25.6% via bunt)

They started tracking infield hits as a separate stat in 1988 (or 2002 for FanGraphs). And yes, Ichiro set the single season record with 64 in 2010.

The joke is still on someone.

The bunt hits are key

Leyland basically said that this morning. He said for all guys he's doesn't want them to get rusty so he said Miggy would get a few at bats or DH and then he would look to get him out of the game.

All 74 at bats he had before this season is a good sample size. Of course he's had a lot of bunt hits this year, that's the point. He's not as fast as either Gardner or Ichiro, and has nowhere near the bat control, yet you think this is a repeatable statistic from iggy. He had just 2 infield hits before this year.
