Tigers vs Nats 5-9-2016 Game 31

It is still early. In 2006 there was a young 26-yr old Tiger with very similar stats around May 9th, and he was replaced by Sean Casey by the end of July.

Castellanos is currently ranked 26th in UZR/150. So metrically speaking, if he improved defensively it hasn't been by much.

Offensively, he has been above rational expectations. He is carrying a very high and unsustainable BABIP, especially against RHP.

He is hitting very well and that is good for the Tigers and they should ride him while he is hot, as they should any player who is hot. But making any judgements one way or the other this soon in a season is just folly.

He's been hitting pretty well since June of last year. Almost a full calendar year.

Ron, this is a sports forum. People are gonna disagree. I'm not gonna go down this road with you again. I didn't direct anything at you. Just stop

You called out the Castellanos detractors the other day as idiots.

If Castellanos had his detractors on this board I'd think they would say something along the lines of that they were happy to be wrong about him.

I've been a huge detractor of Nick C and simply going by sample size, I'm not ready to say I'm 'wrong'. Having said that, I sure am enjoying his at bats so far this season. I've got an extra large order of crispy crow on stand by if he keeps this up.

I am glad he is proving my thoughts wrong, especially his defense, his hitting has improved, laying off low and away pitches, and recently some better fielding skills. I hope it continues.

I don't think anyone is engraving his name on the MVP trophy right now. It's just a point that if some people said that he was terrible, him playing at a much higher level they should be happy about it.

Since Ausmus started managing, DET leads the majors in Blown Quality Starts. Chalk up another.

I am all for success if in fact it is legit and not some small sample size fluke. Even Saltalamacchia started out on a tear and helped the Tigers win some games early on. But now he is back where his career averages suggest he should be.

We could make another thread about shelton but it was pretty shocking the way he fell off. He wasn't just some AAAA guy who hit well for a couple of weeks. he had really good minor league numbers, surprised he was available in the rule 5 draft, great pitch recognition, he was a walks machine, he had a really good full season prior to 2006. Guys like that generally don't burn out quickly

You could extend that sample size back to July of last year. you'd think that a 24 year old former first round pick hitting that well over 3/4 of a season would qualify as a decent sample size.

Hell if not for salty first couple weeks and Nick thus far on the year I think the tigers would be right down there with the twins and braves for worst record in the majors 7-9 wins tops.

This team isn't good

That's a point that I've tried to make several times.

Just because Chris Shelton flamed out doesn't mean that any young player who hits well over an extended period of time is likely to fail. You'd think that guys under 25 who hit well for 5 months or so generally don't get benched 2 months later

Too close to reverse. Killer out, might kill the scoring chance.
