Trade Deadline Deals thread for Tigers

Rankings aside, 4 of the 5 are bonafide prospects and all 4 would be in the Top 10 if they were in the Tiger system. Way better haul then what we got for J.D. (another 2 month rental) and definitely better haul than what we got for Verlander (who wasn't a 2 month rental).

It might be better but when a team keeps their top 3 prospects.. And it doesn't matter if they would be good for Detroit. One top 100 prospect.. And that's why the Orioles should have just resigned him.. Sometimes it's best to keep good players you drafted..

When I say "bona fide"...I mean they have a real chance to be career major leaguers, not Dawel Lugo types. You are getting hung up on where they are ranked (Lugo was ranked in Top 100). I am looking at the career progressions and their metrics. I would be thrilled to have all 5, every one of them, in DET's system. We got 3x low end minor league middle infielders for J.D. Martinez. None of those project like any of these 5. Not even close.

Yusniel Diaz, 21, OF, (AA) hits for average. Walks big time. Star of the All-Star Futures Game. He will be ranked in the top 50, if not top 25 by year's end. Potentially starting for the Orioles next year or later this year if injuries happens.

Dean Kremer, 22, RHP, (A+) 125 Strikeouts in just 86 IP with a reasonable walk rate. 1 bad season in minors as a blemish. He has the arm, whether he starts at MLB or is a back end reliever, time will tell. Enough said.

Rylan Bannon, 22, 3B, (A+) Career .308 BAVG .409 OBP .569 SLG .978 OPS Outstanding plate discipline. Hit tool and slugging. Prototypical power hitting 3B. No red flags to say he won't make it. Just needs to advance and proof himself.

Zach Pop, 21, RHP. Reliever pitcher who is closing at low levels. Probably the player hardest to forecast in this group, but still has tons of upside.

Breyvic Valera, 26, UTIL. Think Niko Goodrum. Same age. Same utility. Almost identical skillsets. Serviceable player to have, but probably not going to be a star, especially at 26.

The Orioles were not going to sign Machado. Period. They are rebuilding and have too many high prices duds on the team (Chris Davis, Mark Trumbo, Adam Jones, Alex Cobb). Prior to this trade, their farm system was probably the worst in MLB or at least near the bottom (and like DET, has been for years). A good friend of mine (grew up in Baltimore, lives in L.A.) absolutely loves this trade. Feels they could NOT have done any better given the circumstances. He is now looking forward to them getting something for Zach Britton. The problem with Britton has been health and they are probably not going to get full value for him. They hung on too long. Even their free agent signings this offseason were ill advised (Cobb, Cashner, etc).

Keep in mind, if they don't trade Machado, he walks at the end of the year and they get the equivalent of a 2nd round pick for him. That is the comparison. There was no question that he was staying, none. Same with J.D. Martinez and the Tigers. Sure, they could have gotten more during last off season (same with DET and J.D.). But like DET, they were waiting for that overwhelming offer and still had delusions they could compete this year.

Mr. I would never trade a 26 year old hitter like Nick..

that's why the Tigers are in the terrible position they are in right now. Mr. I was still buying when he should have been selling....handing out big contracts when he should have been making wise decisions for the long-term health of the franchise.

Mr. Ilitch always wanted the big name stars, and this cost the minor league system. He thought big name established all-star mvp type players would win the Tigers a championship. In one way he was right in the other way over the long haul he wasn't. He wanted instant championship/instant gratification, and my guess is because at his age....running out of time...

So signing FA and losing draft picks, drafting low ceiling type players who were also closer to the majors, so DD could also trade them for the star players.
Add in the imo incompetent front office talent evaluators who continue to draft in the mediocre range, and that is why the talent isn't there to let go of players and reload from the team's minor league system.

It seems they draft the power pitchers, but just don't have the acumen to draft all around position players even now, well maybe this recent draft they are changing a little towards better positional players.
ML teams have changed their thinking on signing or trading for players like Castellanos, who hits, but is mostly a liability on defense.

Look at who they now have on the team through the system or trades, most all position players have low obp, and undisciplined at the plate.

They're in trouble because they didn't trade 26 year olds?

When is the last time Detroit traded an all star (good) ml player? Smoltz? Or any good player at all for that matter. The Tigers troubles are because they can't draft.. The high priced FA junk, like Zimmerman for example, hurt more because we can't draft.

Castellanos is not at all that great. He is home grown and that is it. He has no defense, so he does not rank well for 3B nor RF. Even as a DH, he would only be ranked 5th, and that is with his extreme lefty splits. Against RHP, he is the 8th best RF offensively and would be the 9th best DH. Versus RHP is about 70% of all plate appearances. At 26, he is what he is. Arbitration is just going to add to his cost. What value is it in keeping him?

Eugenio Suarez (All Star) for Alfredo Simon

Forgot about him, having a good career. My point still stands because we traded many ml player but most don't turn out very well. Without Mr. I doing what he did we don't get to 2 WS or win division titles - because the drafted players we had amounted to not a whole lot..

If we're talking about where we're at, it's signing long deals. Even Miggy, as great as he has been - a deal until he's in his 40's is wrong. And Vmart etc. It's all about having one mindset for years when drafting and it's been bad.

Mitch. I get it. DET sucks at drafting and have since later 70s', early 80s'. Suarez and Andrew Miller might be exceptions, but then you have players like Devon Travis, who was derailed by injuries. We still don't know the end to Willy Adames. Hernan Perez type players have been waived, only to find quality time with other teams. Speaking on MIL, you also have All Star Corey Knebel.

In a minute.....but who would take him?

Next year the Tigers will have 3 DH's providing Christin Stewart plays in LF.
He from all I/we have read is not good defensively.

Add Nick in RF barely adequate, and Miggy who will or should be DH a large percentage of games he plays.

Just to add to what I heard on Stewart from the TigsTown Podcast posted in the last couple of days is yes he takes walks, still strikes out, but Mark Anderson said he has trouble catching up to a fastball 95 mph or faster. Stewart will see plenty of that kind of heat in the majors. Now what do they do?

Athletics interested in Tigers RHP Michael Fiers, although serious talks have yet to begin. A’s have the prospect depth for another move after Familia trade.

Mike Fiers *should* be a trade chip. His last 50 IP (8 starts): 2.49 ERA, 3.88 FIP, 1.13 WHIP, 7.1 K/9, 2 BB/9, opponents slashing .235/.282/.372 against. Turned out to be a nice reclamation signing by Al Avila for exactly this purpose.
