Verlander says no contract talk during the season

Hmmm...should the Tigers manage to win the World Series this year, I wonder how motivated Ilitch will be to bankroll another contender that is built to repeat in '14. Could the Tigers attempt to trade him next offseason instead of attempting to negotiate an extension and perhaps make him a career Tiger? With only one season left on his contract, then any potential trade partners would most likely be somewhat more loathe or hesitant to acquire him, and give up blue chip prospects and/or or established players who would appeal to the Tigers, unless they knew that they had a very good chance to extend Verlander themselves.

Justin would of course, need to pitch another near Cy-worthy season and possible postseason so as to keep his potential FA/contract extension value at its highest possible level, which would also benefit the Tigers (IF they already have or will have any intentions of trading him) as well as himself, to become one of, if not THE highest AAV/salaried SP in MLB, should the Tigers begin to negotiate any (perhaps career-encompassing) extension with him next offseason, OR as perhaps an eventual FA in '15.

There are a lot of different scenarios that could play out. IF they win a WS AND they keep Porcello I wouldn't be surprised to see them trade Scherzer or JV. If they were to sign JV and Scherzer pitches this season like he did during the 2nd 1/2 of last season I think they could get a shit ton in return for him. If I owned the team I think I would move JV. He will be 30 and he is going to command way too much money. Think A-Rod but a pitcher.

I kind of like it.

The fact that he's not willing to negotiate this season means it's extra important that he preform at the highest possible levels. Money is a great motivator.

I look at it the other way: With as much talk he has done this off-season I believe he's in it just for the money and eventually he'll leave.

There is no advantage right now for the Tigers to sign an extension, it would be all Verlander's.

If I were DD, I would trade JV right now while his value is at it's peak. It isn't going much higher, and it certainly can drop a ton.

It'd be cool having a super star for their entire career but I agree with you.

But trading Verlander "now" kinda goes up against what the Tigers' elderly and increasingly frail owner Mike ilitch is trying to accomplish...which is to see his ballclub win a World Series (if not more) during the period while he is still mostly lucid and not (as yet) knocking on death's door? The fans (well..most of us anyway) would of course like to see the Tigers field contending teams for as long as possible. But due to who they have signed to $$$MM contracts, and including those salary controlled players, some of whom will/may soon be eligible to earn $$$MM if they are to remain on their near future teams, dunno if the Tigers brass believes that the franchise will be able to retain many if not most of them beyond their current window of WS opportunity, which is ~two years or so.

We have the best pitcher in baseball and trade him for some crapshoot prospects?

Verlander is so intense on his conditioning and pitching at the highest level, why wouldn't he be able to continue pitching well into his 30's?

I want and hope for the Tigers to sign him to a contract similar to Felix, hope he pitches at least 10 more years with Detroit.

Early in the off season, maybe at TigerFest, Verlander said he doesn't think he is even 'half way' through his career.

How is that looking at it the other way? I'm saying it's about money, and he'll have to put up the numbers if he wants to get paid what he could have gotten by extending now.

Look at what Weaver did, he had a hot season and jumped on the money, but he could have gotten more if he played his contract out and went FA like Justin seems to be determined to do.

So JV is going to play his guts out reaching for that 'largest contract ever to a pitcher' brass ring, and if that means it helps us in 2013, I'm all for that.

I agree with this. Verlander is one of those guys who is a freak...like a Nolan Ryan. He'll still have no problems popping radar guns in 8-10 years. I hope he stays. And I don't know why everyone always assumes we cannot afford it. Why? People come to the park and they will continue to do so if we are good. It's a billionaires money anyways. Why should I really care how he spends it.

But the ball is in JV's court. He's ****y and supremely confident he'll have a big year and he'll be able to choose whatever situation he wants. That's what I like about him. He has a great players mentality. Even if he has a down year for him he'll still be filthy rich.

Yep...JV has been a horse for the Tigs and he is reminiscent of the top CG SPs who also had long careers in MLB who I remember from the 60s and 70s. I would be quite shocked if he doesn't continue to pitch @ an elite or near-elite level well into his mid-30s, if not his late 30s. Even if he should have another down season like '08, I expect that he will spend the following offseason, along with the preseason making any necessary adjustments.

It has become quite rare for players to spend their entire careers with only one team, ever since the advent of FA, and Justin is one of the very few current Tigers who has a decent shot of doing so. The fact that it would most likely cost the Tigers dearly to make that a reality not only b/c of his potential $alary, but also perhaps it might result in the Tigers eventually losing a key/core player or players like Scherzer, Fister, Cabrera, Avila and/or Jackson to FA (if not traded beforehand). However, once he is signed to a long extension with a likely VERY gaudy $alary, he could become ~nearly~ untradeable like Fielder and Sanchez.

I thought this was a good article regarding the money....when Prince signed with us.

The Tigers already were on the hook for mega-deals with Miguel Cabrera (eight years, $152.3 million through 2015) and Justin Verlander (five years, $80 million through 2014).

The influx of new TV money should assuage payroll worry.

"The Tigers have the treasury to afford that kind of contract. Moreover, the club is looking at a revenue stream that will allow it to pay for several huge contracts on the order of Verlander, Cabrera and Fielder's," said Gary Gillette, the Detroit-based author, co-editor of the ESPN Baseball Encyclopedia and board member of the Society for American Baseball Research.

"The Tigers also can afford to round out the club with well-paid veterans at other positions when it makes sense. That is, they don't have to load up with minimum-wage rookies or low-paid players with only a little big-league experience in order to afford the big paychecks that their superstars earn."

Detroit committed $134.4 million to player contracts by Opening Day (which includes salaries and signing bonuses, according to tracking done by BaseballProspectus.com).

Payroll concerns were largely theoretical since there has been no evidence ownership cannot afford to sustain its spending. Ilitch-owned companies generate more than $2.4 billion in annual revenue, and some of that cash is believed to subsidize Tigers operating losses reported by Forbes.com. The Ilitch fortune stems largely from the family's Little Caesars pizza chain.

"With the club going to the postseason in 2012, Detroit will profit handsomely in 2013 and 2014. And, unless the Tigers get blown out early in October this year, the 2012 postseason will provide a nice little windfall at the end of a profitable year," Gillette said.

No question Verlander trade would be risky with the prospects might turn to shit..But IMO, when his contract is over - he leaves and we get nothing or he signs the most stupid contract and he's making AROD money when he's not lights out anymore. Even teams that spend money have limits from time to time.

Why do Detroit sports fans always want to run their superstars out of town? I don't get it and i never will.....lol.

What superstar has the "fans" run out of town?

I believe that he posted "want to" which of course means that the fans never really get to. Lots of Tigers fans wanted to run Inge out of town, and failed to get their wish for years. Probably the only players that Tigers fans increasingly disliked and wanted gone, and they soon got their wishes fulfilled fairly quickly was Grilli, Mesa, Farnsy, and Valverde. Raburn, Kelly, Robertson, and Willis, nope...they waaay overstayed their welcome.

That's just dumb. What fans even "want" to run superstars out of town?

JV is talking about being the highest paid player, first 200m pitcher or did he say 300m? Why can't he show a little Kaline class and not worry about the money. Knowing he's going to get paid handsomely.

That's like the anti-superstar list, lol.

Looking for examples from you on this: The only time I remember that might have been the case when there was talk about the Wings trading Yzerman to Ottawa.

When you think about all the great pitchers in the last 45 years (Maddux, Clemens, Johnson, Halladay, Grienke, Hunter, Sutton, Santana, Martinez, Pettite, Schilling, Morris, Gooden, Cone, Seaver, Glavine, Smoltz...to name some) none of them played on one team in their careers, so it's likely that Verlander won't either.
