Fired Los Angeles Angels clubhouse attendant names pitchers in ball-doctoring case.
espn

A revealing text message from star pitcher Gerrit Cole has been submitted as evidence in Brian Harkins' quest to prove he was unfairly made a scapegoat when the Los Angeles Angels fired him as their clubhouse attendant for supplying ball-doctoring substances to pitchers.

The message -- dated Jan. 17, 2019 -- was filed in Orange County (California) Superior Court on Thursday as opposition to a request to dismiss the original lawsuit submitted by Harkins' attorneys in August.

"Hey Bubba, it's Gerrit Cole," the text reads. "I was wondering if you could help me out with this sticky situation [winky face emoji]. We don't see you until May, but we have some road games in April that are in cold weather places. The stuff I had last year seizes up when it gets cold ..."

The opposition also includes a declaration from Harkins in which he recalled a March 26 interview with attorneys from MLB and the Angels. During the interview, Harkins claims, he identified Cole, Justin Verlander, Edwin Jackson, Max Scherzer, Felix Hernandez, Corey Kluber, Joba Chamberlain, Adam Wainwright and Tyler Chatwood among the pitchers who previously asked for his specific blend of pine tar and rosin, which became popular throughout the league after he made it for former closer Troy Percival more than 20 years ago.

Harkins also named several current and former Angels -- Percival, Brendan Donnelly, Kevin Jepsen, Cam Bedrosian, Keynan Middleton, Yusmeiro Petit, Luke Bard, Matt Andriese, Dylan Peters, Jose Suarez, Kaleb Cowart and Dylan Bundy -- who used the blend.

I totally forgot he had TJ surgery and he is going to miss the entire 2021 season. $33M to sit on his ass and do nothing. Not bad

From David Laurila: Another Tweet that crossed my timeline strongly suggested that Rick Porcello shouldn?t have won the American League Cy Young Award in 2016. Most people who responded agreed, with some opining that Porcello should have finished no higher than third or fourth. Justin Verlander was the top choice of said responders.

Here are some numbers from that year?s top candidates (including won-lost records, as they likely influenced at least some of the BBWAA voters):

WAR: Verlander 5.4, Sale 5.3, Porcello 5.1, Kluber 4.9.

IP: Verlander 227.2, Sale 226.2, Porcello 223, Kluber 215.

ERA: Verlander 3.04, Kluber 3.14, Porcello 3.16, Sale 3.34.

FIP: Kluber 3.26, Porcello 3.40, Sale 3.46, Verlander 3.48.

SO/W: Porcello 5.91, Sale 5.18, Verlander 4.46, Kluber 3.98.

W/L: Porcello 22-4, Kluber 18-9, Sale 17-10, Verlander 16-9.

Was Verlander, or perhaps one of the others, more deserving than Porcello? Quite possibly, but the margins in most all of these categories are pretty narrow. No one pitcher ? not even Verlander ? was far and away the cream of the crop.

And then there was Zack Britton, who finished fourth in the official voting. The Orioles closer threw 67 innings over 69 relief appearances, and had 47 saves, an 0.54 ERA, a 1.94 FIP, and a league-best 6.33 WPA. In my opinion, he?s the one who should have gotten the award. Britton?s dominance was unmatched by any pitcher in the league that season.

I'm glad Porcello won it. It'd stick with him for life no matter how things turn out. Good for him.

Porcello lead MLB with 6.8 Runs Per Game Started

Porcello 6.8
Kluber 5.3

Sale 4.7
Verlander 4.0

Average Game Score

Verlander 61.6
Sale 60.6
Kluber 60.4
Porcello 58.7

Run support = Wins. Other than that, anyone other than Porcello should have won the CYA. But that isn't new.

And the bad news will not stop!
Minor-league injury notes:
Daz Cameron on the 7-day injured list at Triple A Toledo with a fractured right wrist.
Franklin P?rez has been placed on the injured list at Single A West Michigan with a right shoulder capsule defect. (He will see a specialist in LA Thursday).

Perez had to be hurt before that trade , that guy has pitched 8 innings since we got him Daz was there number 3 of prospect and Rogers was there 2 or 3 catching prospect. Now what we know about Houston does anyone think they didn?t know?
Can?t think of a time were you had a player with Verlander?s track record and got less. Incompetent Al should have been fired for that trade alone, look what happen in Colorado, he made that dumb trade and he got axed 3 months later.

Highly unlikely JV would return to the Tigers for 4 major reasons. First, that he'll be 39 years old and will want more than a 1-year contract that would take him into his 40's.

Second, that next year will still be a recovery year for his arm will full efficiency not expected until closer to 2023. (see Fulmer, Michael) Highly unlikely the Tigers will spend that money and not get the desired results until a full year later, at best.

Third, if a team is rebuilding with a roster full of 20-something starting pitchers, does adding a 40-year-old pitcher make sense? And does JV really want to return to a team nowhere near ready to be competitive?

And fourth, the salary dump performed by the Tigers and resulting disastrous trade back in 2017 is something the organization doesn't want to revisit with fans. Mr. I's son doesn't exhibit the same sentimental streak as his dad.
