Verlander traded to Houston, TJ Surgery, Wins 2 WS, Wins 3rd Cy Young, a Met, Astro again

what have we learned today
1. HOU will extend Justin Verlander a qualifying offer..which also means somebody lost a bet to me..

and HOU will also bid..albeit likely lightly for Carlos Correa..am I shocked..FUCK NO..I have tweeted both things for months.
Jim Crane on Carlos Correa?s comments that the Astros don?t do big or long deals: ?I never count anything out. We haven?t done it in the past. We have a history of something in the neighborhood of five (years) is the most we?ve ever done since I?ve been here. Things can change.?
my guess the Astros floor is 25M..Al Avila is sad today..this was his entire bad strategy..good news..NOBODY listens to Al Avila anymore..if you didn't believe me you haven't really been paying attention to whats going on at COPA.

Despite how much we may love JV, does it support a successful rebuild in wanting a 39 yr. old who hasn't pitched in over 1.5 years to return to the Tigers? It's not like he's going to pick up where he left off and the Tigers need multiple dependable SPs now - not down the road.
Besides, Astros owner Jim Crane just stated that JV would want a multi-year contract.

Today, another chance for readers to have increased opportunities to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful conversations and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversation threads with not just comments but replies to others. And for those of you still going into offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom calls ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s hot topic. For this blog only, a maximum of 10 sentences please.

Justin Verlander hopes to return to the mound next April after not pitching for 21 months (just short of 2 years) due to injury and Tommy John surgery. Houston?s owner said he expects that the Astros will make him a qualifying offer of $18.4 mill. However, it may be part of a strategy to regain a draft pick lost from the cheating scandal.

If JV accepts the QO, it would be for just 1 year. But at age 39, Verlander would prefer a multi-year deal and is rumored to want to test the market.
The Astros have also stated that they expect JV to want a ?contract of some length.?

If Justin turns down the QO offer, then any other team signing him would forfeit a draft pick.

Unless he holds his own personal pitching exhibition pre-season, JV would sign with a team not having his arm tested post-surgery. And historically, it is 1.5 years after the operation before a pitcher is said to be fully recovered and pitching to their former established standards. Even though he technically could have come back this past September, his doctor did not clear him to pitch.

JV has stated that he would love to return to Detroit. But would the Tigers want him back? Would he work well as the veteran presence the team needs?
Does Verlander fit into Detroit?s rebuild plans? Is the money he would want spent better elsewhere within the roster? Does the fans? love for their former franchise face merit his return?

You decide. Would you want Justin Verlander to return to Detroit?

Do you want Justin Verlander to return to Detroit?

1. Yes, bring him back.

2. No, he's not the right fit.

I?d welcome Verlander back to Detroit, but will CI pay for him?

I find it hard to believe that he would turn down the QO or $18.4M

It will be telling if he turns it down he is only in it for the money.

I doubt he comes back to Detroit, but maybe as he comes to realize in another year or a few to come back to where he made his reputation. Right now I don't think he wants to be the mentor to youngsters he wants to go after his goal of 300 Wins and he said he wants to pitch until he is 45. Can he physically? Will he?

I don't hate Stafford. Just thought he never did enough. Verlander is just a down right cheat. A two-face. All righteous until he wasn't.

You make a great politician Mitch. I mean for years all I read on the Lions forum was Stafford sucked because he couldn't get the Lions to the playoffs himself. He padded his stats in the 4 quarter in meaningless games never mind the top 5 to 10 career 4th quarter comebacks, If he fell short it was padding his stats. Never mind it being a team game with running back receivers and OL, and then the defense is there half the game when he isn't.

Verlander cheated? Okay sure maybe IDK but everyone cheats in baseball, and yep the teams are still cheating something new electronically.
Who is going to cheat the most between the red sox and astros?

So it's 0kay to cheat? And for Verlander who always said differently when he was here.. I guess it only matters when you have a chance at a title.

Tired about hearing about the rest of the team. So Goff gets a pass because the rest of the team stinks?

Personally it's not okay to cheat, but when in that kind of place I guess they do to keep winning by cheating. In a few short years or less with all the new analytics the Tigers have brought into the fold, I wouldn't doubt that some form of cheating will happen.

IDK know how it makes sense to be tired of the rest of the team when it is even more of a team sport with 53 players? and two select groups of players on the field at different times, We are discussing Stafford, not Goff.

Qualifying offers in MLB will be coming out soon. Justin Verlander is believed to get one ($18.4 mill) from the Astros who believe he will turn it down in search of a multi-year contract. This strategy will allow the Astros to receive a compensatory draft pick.

However, if they don't offer JV a QO, it may be a red flag and indicator of concern over his arm. He hasn't pitched since July 2020 (only 1 game in all of 2020) and had Tommy John last year. He was not cleared to pitch by doctors in September this year.

Giants will sign Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, http://MLB.com predicts.

Whoever wrote the article didn't do their homework. No team is going to put these two together. They are oil and water. Way too much history that wouldn't make this an ideal reunion.

There were issues when they were together in Detroit. JV getting the Opening Day start after Max won the Cy Young for example. And there there was the mess with trying to re-sign Max. Reports that one reason he left was to get out from JV's shadow.

While JV has been diplomatic in his comments, Max hasn't, especially when it came to the juiced balls controversy.
