From Yu to Yoenis.

And for Tiger fans: Yes, they're in on Cespedes, but I've heard that their budget to bid for him is pretty limited.

awesome...love it when the season starts off dissappointing. Can only get better from there, right?!

What's the point being in if you're limited? You either go hard or not at all. That's like go after Prince Fieder for 3 years @ 14m.

I think the Yankees will leak that they are in just to raise up the price, and I think we are willing to go pretty high, regardless of somebodys tweets :) and I also think we have a plan B that we are waiting on Cespedes before we do anything else. I just can't believe DD would stay with the platoons at 2b and 3b, and I'm sure we will get a veteran 5th SP, you can't be sure any of the kids will be ready yet.

Tightening the belt? I wonder why. It is like we've frivolously spent money on under performing players and there isn't any money left to go after players that might help the team. We can't say that though. Not on this board at least. Resign inge next year please DD, we need his all star caliber defense!!!

All talk. The Tigers have been scouting this guy for like 5-6 years, right? It's all banter. The Tigers are getting their guy.....

The Marlins are being aggressive on Yoenis Cespedes, with the Nationals right behind them. Earlier this weekend, we heard there's some divide within the Marlins' front office on Cespedes.

IDK KC. I mean, I love what I hear about the guy, but it's the unknown that really concerns me. Is he really, what, 26 or something? Or 30 something?? I'm sure Fidel's folks would supply accurate data on that. Then, there's the level he's been playing at. Yep, lots of great players in Cuba...but just how will be match up in MLB?? I'd love to see us get him, don't misunderstand. It's just that I'd hate to see us pay dearly for a 'Ryan Leaf like' guy and get stuck for years where we won't be able to go after other FA's because we got took by this deal. Would he be Leaf or Manning? Bush or Verlander?? We just don't know and that should cause a pause even in Miami, NY and DC.

We have been scouting him for longer than these couple months right? I thought I read that our scouts had known about him for a while and that makes me feel better about his age.

If DD and the Tigers have known and watched him as he says, probably 26. But what you said is true, some players from Cuba, DR, Ven, you don't know unless you drafted them in the rule 4 international draft as 16/17 year olds. Jose Contreras was older than his birthcertificate, as well as other players, the shortstop miguel tejada. Heck, years ago Billy Bruton admitted after retiring he was 4/5 years older than listed.
The depth of quality in the cuban baseball league probably drops off after a few players per team. idk
I would hope the Tigers have their wants of Cespedes and all his talent from seeing him do well against top pitching from either all-star games, playoffs, the world baseball series and the top pitching talent of the participating countries.

I don't understand why the Tigers would want to roll the likely big $$$ and contract years dice on this guy, when they have already bypassed a few FAs who would be much less risky and help to fill obvious holes on the field and in their lineup, but hey, what do I know?

Sometimes this franchise seems to get fixated on someone they want and ignore much if not most of what otherwise obviously needs to be addressed....like 2B ever since Polanco left, and 3B ever since it became obvious to everyone outside of his POTG texting slappies, that Inge was declining at the plate, and as of late, also on the field.

What will the Tigers do if Inge, Shinebox and Jackson all slump at the start of the season, and do not heat up as the weather warms and the season progresses..hmm? What will they do if Young becomes indifferent, barely hits his weight at the plate, and begins to more often boot baseballs hit on bounces out to LF? What if Avila had a career season last year, and begins to hit more like he did during the last season that..ugh..Lard was a Tiger?

I think that their rotation is great at the top, although JV likely won't repeat as MVP, but could as Cy Young, but after that the confidence level begins to drop, as there is no guarantee that Fister will be as lights out as he was so soon after he was traded, but I think that he will be very good, if not excellent nevertheless. Not all that certain about Scherzer or esp. Porcello, however, and their BP looks to be very solid, although like JV, Valverde should not be expected to repeat his perfection in saves as closer.

If they don't get their "man", or perhaps the spitter from the Cubbies then why not try to resign ex-Tiger Edwin Jackson, he is only 28, but for some odd reason just can't hang around for very long with any team , or hell...why not do it anyway b/c it is unlikely that they will be able to obtain what I believe that they really need, who is a LH that is somewhere between a Buehrle and a Liriano?

The asking price is reportedly pretty steep and long term for Jackson. Pretty sure Boras is the agent too.

"MONDAY, 11:21am: Edwin Jackson's asking price is approximately $60MM over five years, writes ESPN NewYork's Wallace Matthews."

"The Yankees like the free agent righty, "but not at that price," writes Matthews. Matthews' colleague Buster Olney tweeted the same, saying that unless the Yankees' budget grows, there's no room for Jackson."

"Ultimately I expect Jackson to settle for something closer to four years and $44MM, which wouldn't be an awful price for a 28-year-old innings eater with a touch of upside."

Boras Seeks Five Years For Edwin Jackson

Yeah, 5+60M thats too damned steep and too long, and I might be promoting obtaining EJax for near that kinda coin, but only IF he was an ace lefty. Otherwise 4 and 44 seems to be alright ...but moreso for the Yankees. Had he been a lefty, I doubt if the Tigers would have wanted to part with him during his first go-round with the team anyway.

The Tigers have had a good relationship with Boras, and I have to wonder if Edwin would want to be under the bright glare of the NY media spotlight....as he seems to be pretty quiet, keeps to himself and doesn't act like hes some kinda spoiled superstar. Never read anything quotable from him during his brief time with the Tigers.

EJax would be put under a lot more pressure to perform at a consistently higher level, but he definitely has the ability to do it.
If the Tigers acquired him, they wouldn't have to give up anyone or much more likely a couple or several of value in return for yet another RH SP like Garza, and that might also mean that they could shop Rick Porcello+? to get the infield help that they really need.

I really don't want to see the Tigers trade for a RH SP. Would much rather if so, whoever it is to be a LH SP, if it is gonna cost them much or maybe most of what value that they have left in the high minors...JMO.

Edwin Jackson is asking for more;

According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, Yankees general partner Hal Steinbrenner met recently with agent Scott Boras to discuss right-hander Edwin Jackson.
Jackson is said to be seeking a five-year deal worth around $15 million annually, which is why interest has been so low. If he makes that asking price a little more attractive, things could pick up quickly. E-Jax posted a 3.79 ERA and 148/62 K/BB ratio in 199 2/3 innings last season between the White Sox and Cardinals. The Orioles have also expressed interest this winter.

hahahaaa...wow...ho-lee-shit...g/l with that, Edwin!!

When is your "next" Cy Young gonna be awarded?

::)

Lets get Manny instead ;)..he's determined, motivated, and contrite, he would come waay cheaper than Cespedes, and unlike Yoenis, has documented proof that he can back up his brashness.

Too bad that he is now likely too old and slow to play LF, but I have to wonder if he would really be any worse out in LF than Young could be.

Manny: 'I'm going to be a role model'
