2016 Draft- Who ya got?

Well you know how I feel about him. I never thought he had a good football IQ. The stuff he said was at the beginning of the season about quick of a learner he is. Then the season started, and he had to dumb down the playbook. And it happened again this year.

Big arm, just not a student of the game. And it's going to be his downfall.

Yeah, and both OC's had to "dumb down" the playbook because of the OLine. Not one of them said that Stafford was the problem. All of a sudden Ian Rappoport is coming out with statements that Lombardi didn't think Stafford can or won't learn the scheme? What a load of horse shit. Stafford's problem was never his football IQ. So somebody is lying through his fucking teeth is what I'm saying lol. A game of he said, she said....what a joke.

Is he dumb'ng down the system for Matt or for the OL?

But that's bullshit. Lombardi and Cooter threw the OLine under the bus for dumbing down the playbook. I'm not saying that Stafford isn't in the hotseat and is probably done, but this article comes out when Stafford is basically having his worse year as a pro? I'm not buying it. Especially when BOTH OC's already blamed the OLine THIS year and LAST year...

Is probably both to be honest. Matt couldn't take on enough to handle protections which is evident in watching the games. ...so lombardi had to dumb down the offense for the oline. Both statements can be true.

The question is... is our O-line really THIS bad... or are they trying to get Stafford killed?

I still believe in Stafford, and I want him here playing at his best, but I have to admin, it's looking to me on a lot of plays like they are just letting guys run by them.

I think the oline is just that bad, not a chance they would purposely destroy their careers. They are borderline, never get another starting gig in the nfl "bad". Imo,they will move on from Swanson and Waddle this offseason. Age/years in the league cannot excuse this poor of play. If they were just mad at Stafford, then why can't they run block either?

Probably why the coaches are getting fired. They don't know who to blame lol.

I think Waddle is as good as gone this year, but I dont think they will give up on Swanson quite yet...Center is a tough job to master, as its the most mentally demanding job on the Oline. I could see them signing a veteran center to push/mentor Swanson this offseason/training camp, but just dumping him would be premature IMO.

While I do not disagree with the idea of drafting an OT, I'm really coming to the conclusion the issue with the OL has been improper coaching of technique. Every single player involved with the OL, including the backups, have regressed. That tells me the coaches never focused on technique and fundamentals, instead just drew up plays and told them to make it happen. The smallest details of how to make that happen were never properly provided. So you get guys who are constantly confused and showing bad footwork while the casual observation is "WTF!?!?!...WHAT did they just DO????" but because they are not properly coached on how to execute proper technique to make a play work, they are just doing their best to run the play but are blown up as a result of improper coaching of fundamentals.

No, just because the are in the NFL does NOT mean they do not need constant coaching on fundamentals and help with determining proper angles for a specific play or best ways to execute. Just like the Wolverines needed Harbaugh to focus on these things, the Lions need a coach to get them back on track. In terms of raw talent, the OL has quite a bit (except maybe at RT)...but because that talent is not properly shaped/molded/developed the end result is a shitshow and we as fans blame the players instead of the coaches.

Speaking of the draft, why does it feel like the Lions are picking at the top when, once again, it isn't the best year to do that?

Stafford & Suh were before the rookie contracts, huge financial problems existed as a result.

This year the top talent does not seem as "top" as what I perceive will be available in 2017's draft.

Paxton Lynch, while putting up solid numbers, is still a QB for Memphis. Scouts say he has an arm able to make all of the NFL throws, and that he can make them on the run as well as being mobile enough to run the ball when necessary. Makes sense to take him if Stafford is no longer going to be the QB. Trading/releasing Stafford will result in a bit of a cap hit, but with Lynch on the rookie cap it lessens that blow enough to make it a possibility...maybe.

That said, if another QB is available in R6...like maybe Travis Wilson just as an example...it might be a good idea to get another rookie QB to be the #3 QB on the roster with Lynch being either #1 or #2 and if Stafford is gone there are plenty of journeyman vets capable of being the #2 and help Lynch.

If we release Stafford and draft Lynch (even assuming 1st overall), the net cap savings is over 5 million in 2016 and 16 million in 2017. So obviously the financial aspect of it is very doable as it saves us money each year.

Yes the Oline has been horrible, However Rivers with a worse Oline (per PFF) and a worse run game (YPC), has put up an above 100 QB rating and is a top 10 QB. So it can be done.

The new GM will need to decide if there is a franchise QB in this draft. We know Matt is not one. If you think there is you take him regardless of the Oline. QB is by far the most important player.

That money then can be applied toward better FAs too. If they have the #1 overall, they know going into FA who they are targeting. If it is QB, they can release Stafford and be a bigger player in FA to fill the defensive holes, even if it is only 1 more guy than they otherwise would have gotten, or a $5M upgrade over who they would otherwise have gotten. $5M is a pretty big difference in talent when talking about a D position.

Drop Ngata too. No need to have that kind of money tied up like that. Spread that money around and build a solid team D. Almost every player on the D can be shown the door too. Obviously they would keep several of them, but it would not surprise me to see 5, maybe even 6 new players starting on D next year compared to who is currently on the field. Spreading Ngata's and this $5M from Stafford around to get better talent, that's a much improved D on paper.

Ziggy is a UFA after next season, he'll want to get paid. Keep that in mind. Not sure if there any other potentially big contract re-signings on the horizon.

Slay is up too after next season, I know in his mind he will think he deserves to be very highly paid.
He is our best CB, so it would be tough to let him walk.
