2016 Draft- Who ya got?

Every time I'm down on Stafford he puts together a three game stretch where I think I've been too hard on him. Then he follows that up with a five game stretch that tells me that my judgement is just fine.

You could also replace "game" with "throw"

True. I'm back on the love Stafford train again after last game.
Why? Because he put up some numbers against crappy teams. This team is 6-9. He failed when it counted.

Lombardi gone, and the offense can actually put together more than 1 solid drive. This is not a coincidence. If Stafford leaves, I will honestly go with him. It's absolute nonsense to go qb shopping in the draft. Starting over to save some $ for a few years, while the new qb goes through his ups and downs(mostly downs) for a few years before he has a good year and we need to pay him accordingly, gets us exactly where? I'm not going through that again yet, because it is a waste of the Lions and more importantly, MY time. I like what I've seen from Stafford this year, the rest of the team...not so much. If the Lions want to start over, they should do so with Stafford, Ansah, Slay, and a few of the young guys staying around.

You seriously believe that? Dude is absolute fire this year as long as he has protection. In the games he gets hit he doesn't do very well. Do you watch the games? He had the worst running game in the league and the defense at one point was giving up 29 a game. As well as being the most sacked quarterback and hit. But it's him right? Learn the game.

People like you are why our fan base looks dumb. After all the years of shitty quarterbacks you hate ours because he isn't tom Brady, if I asked a single person on this board before the year if Matt stafford finished the year with 67% completion percentage and 30ish tds with 13 or so picks everyone would have been satisfied and also said no way his percentage is that high.

It would make ZERO sense to go after a QB in the top half of the draft this year. If they want to try to upgrade over Dan O that's fine.....but replacing Stafford in this draft would be Millenesque.

Hes part of having one of the worst running games in the league. We could be sitting vs a 5 man box on a perfectly good running down and he passes the ball. Conversely, ive seen us run vs 8 and 9 man boxes plenty. Simple math people....

Lol, so now Matt is to blame for the running game? Wow

Stafford seems to love Cooter.

#9 with his best stretch of football ever.

The turn around Stafford has had under Jim Bob has been astounding, to be honest. I have always been a Stafford supporter, but even I didnt see him being THIS good.

Lombardi got fired after the Minny game, and before the London game. I think like 10/26 or something. Excluding the London game (as you cant implement a new offense in 3 days), here are Staffords numbers with Jim Bob as the OC (7 games):

1880 yards, 70% compl, 16 TD, 2 INT, 109.6 QB rating

Those numbers are outrageous...especially considering where he was in the first half of the season. Do I think Stafford will be able to maintain that level of production throughout an entire season? No, but I think he can be a very good QB, a top 10 QB in the league. Cutting ties with him and drafting a QB early would be foolish.

Draft a QB late, or sign a young guy or two - but dont get rid of a young talented (yet inconsistent) QB just because.

Holy shit, Phillip Rivers and Tom Brady must suck, too. Awful running games in S.D. and N.E. too!!

LOL. I understand what Hughes is saying, but putting more than a VERY small amount of blame on the QB for a shitty running game is borderline LKP retarded.

sure just dismiss the last 10 years of me saying our oline sucks...that's fair. In regards to this conversation all I was saying is that hes part of the decision making process that leads us to having a shitty running game.

I would say lombardis sytem was the biggest problem. Followed by oline talent. Followed by our qb.

Rb talent is not a problem....yet its the only thing we ever try to correct.

Its dumb...

I agree with THIS post 100%. I think the churning of RB's was more about trying to find a Jahvid Best type talent to fit Linehan's/Lombardi's system. Best just couldn't stay healthy. Bell was a great find, but is only a slightly above average back, talent wise. Abdullah has all the talent, but can he fix his fumbling issue??

I just don't get blaming a QB for ANY portion of a running game issues. There are so many stats that disprove any correlation between the two.

With as many 6 and 7 man boxes as the Lions have seen since CJ came here, we should be able to call a FB dive on EVERY play for 3 yards all the way down the field. However, our Oline talent has been so poor we've just never been able to get anything going on a consistent basis.

Besides a few audible calls here and there.....im not sure how Stafford has ANYTHING to do with it. Watch ANY NFL game.....you will here the KILL KILL KILL by every QB....and more often than not its a simple off tackle play. Rarely do they produce anything decent.

70% and 2 INTS over a 7 game stretch???

That's Brady, Rodgers territory right there. (before anyone kills me, I do realize its a small sample size against so so competition - and NO I am not saying Stafford is as good as those two)

But as it has been pointed out NUMEROUS times, even by the Stafford haters on this board, the #'s don't lie. He has been PHENOMINAL under Cooter.

In typical Lions fashion, I completely expect the new GM to fire Caldwell and let go of Cooter and Austin only to bring in coordinators who will struggle.

I saw a report today of Stafford clamoring to keep Cooter. All this talk is moot until we get a GM....and while I agree Stafford has been improved since Coots took over....I just don't know how a new GM can look his guy for HC in the eye and say "thanks for taking the job but ive already hired your OC." It just doesn't work out that way unless we get some sort of Gase type HC that establishes his own system and cooter is just kept on as OC to be a glorified QB coach because a guy like Gase doesn't really have a staff of his own.

If im chosing id rather have a proven coach come in here with a couple guys under his wing that hes comfortable with already and can establish a new culture moving forward. We tried the "throw a bunch of shit against a wall and see if it sticks" thing with Caldwell.....I think we can all agree it was a mistake.

he has been very efficient in this stretch of games. Like you said, he has faced some of the worst pass defenses in the league. I think Cooter is asking Stafford to do even less than he was asked to do with Lombardi. I think I saw a stat where Stafford is 31st in the league in passes in the air...something like that. It was in one of these threads.

It's a good thing to ask very little of him. He performs better.
