2016 Draft- Who ya got?

And let me know when you have Stafford's junk out of your mouth ;) F'in bro.

To all those who say "move Stafford if you can".......what would be your plan to replace him? Who do you get?

I realize it's not going to happen with them moving him this season for draft picks. However, I'd rather see a QB taken relatively high (3rd, 4th) so Stafford FINALLY has someone behind him that's halfway decent. He's never had anyone to actually push him, he's never concerned about his job security.

That's the thing!! What's the plan? You're either drafting a kid high (1st, 2nd rd) and basically telling Stafford that his days are numbered. Fine. Keep Stafford for another year and let this kid learn the ins and outs of the NFL. Or, if the kid you drafted looks like the real deal, do you play him immediately and trade Stafford somehow?

OR

You draft a kid later on and "push" Stafford for playing time? Honestly, I don't see why you do this. Another late draft pick who is a developmental player is a waste of time IMO. Unless you really think he could be a starter one day.

I say option (A) if anything. No more developmental players. Especially at the QB position. Would rather see them go after a WR or stud D player in the first 3 rds.

One thing going in Staffs favor to remain is they should have a lot of draft picks this year to work with. If we trade him for a high pick and use it to upgrade other areas of need, we could potentially nab a Conner Cook or Carson Wentz in the 2nd or 3rd round. Christian Hackenburg has the makeup to be a solid NFL QB and could be taken in 3rd or 4th and may be better than Wentz or Cook but I think Cook is going to be the best QB coming out of College.

I have seen Conner Cook play in a lot of games and there is nothing he does that makes me think he will be the best QB in this draft class.

Really? He works with George Whitfield in the off-season. He runs a pro style offense but has to play in a conservative offensive scheme. Strong arm and throws a beautiful deep ball with excellent touch. Excellent game manager. Good size. He will start in the NFL and how soon will depend on who drafts him. In my opinion, the safest QB pick in the draft.

Accuracy! 56.9 completion percentage in college. That is TERRIBLE! That ranks 84th in college football.

You could go the Packers route. When Rodgers was drafted, he sat 3 years. Not saying we should draft a QB in round 1, maybe round 2, but the options just aren't, either play him or push Matt right now. Granted Favre was much older when GB drafted Rodgers.

I agree with the developmental player is a wasted pick.

Think I saw Kannel say today he is 5th in QBR. So while he doesn't have the best accuracy....he still makes very good decisions. Id say hes Big Ben Esque when it comes to slight movements in the pocket to give him more time to make the throw he wants....that's huge in the nfl and what our current QB lacks the most.

As a Spartan fan......I watch every game. The comparison to RuthlessRaper is a good one. I think Cook will be one of those guys who's completion % actually is better in the NFL than in college.

His accuracy issues are real. Like Stafford, he throws a lot of balls high and in the NFL more of those will get picked. However, he has great pocket awareness and makes great decisions with the ball......rarely trying to force it somewhere when pressured.

Cook is a poor mans Stafford. Good QB with some accuracy issues, but he'll make a few throws that are jaw dropping. I personally think the pressure for him to be successful here would be too much. Don't want him, but wouldn't lose my mind over it...

I don't believe you're thinking this through. You'd be OK going into the 2016 season with Hackenburg/Cook/Wentz and Dan O as your QB options??

I wouldn't.

So, are you thinking Free Agent?? The best three available are (IMO).....

Fitzpatrick
Cousins
Bradford

I think Bradford sucks. Stafford is better than Bradford.....and its not close.

Fitzpatrick is a decent QB......but has had one winning season (this year) in 8 years. He's also 33. Solid option......but again.....Stafford is better, IMO.

Cousins is an interesting option. MSU grad. BUT, he is going to get PAID and has had exactly one good season. So, you could roll the dice but you'd end up with a large unknown with a contract similar to what Stafford has now. That's a big ???? Also, there is ZERO guarantee that the Lions could land Cousins......Snyder is almost certainly going to throw a large vault full of 100's his way.

The rest of the QB FA's look like this....

Henne
Stanton
Matt Moore
Schaub
Clemens
Cassel
Whitehurst
McCown
Joe Webb
Vick
TJ Yates
Weeden
Clausen
Matt Flynn

RGIII isn't a FA.....but certainly will be available.

I would want no part of ANY of those players.

What about the Draft???

Well, here are the options....

Paxton Lynch
Jared Goff
Connor Cook
Carson Wentz
Cardale Jones
Hackenburg
Brissett

There are more, obviously, but not ranked in the top 4 rounds (yet). I'm absolutely sure that I know enough about football that there isn't a name on that list that is certain to be better than Stafford. There are massive ????'s about all of them.

I also know enough to know that one of them probably will be. Who will be is the question. Is there anyone on this board who thinks the Lions will draft well enough to find the one QB who will be???

I'm not.

And again, I'm not sure ANY of them will be.

Keeping Stafford is not only likely......it's almost fucking mandatory if the Lions want anything to do with winning games in 2016.

I would love drafting Cook......but not as a replacement to Stafford. I would draft him with the same thinking in mind that Washington had when taking RGIII and Cousins in the same draft.

You draft Cook for a few reasons....

1. Dan O sucks. He's an instant upgrade at an important position.....backup QB

2. You also take him with the thinking that if Cook has to see because of an injury to Stafford and does well......he's instant trade bait to a team looking for a QB.

3. If Stafford sucks.......you're backup could be a long term option as the replacement......not a shitty backup you'd look to replace in the next draft.

Washington made a smart move in taking Cousins along with RGIII......if they didn't.....theyd be looking at ANOTHER qb in this draft......as they'd probably be picking in the top 3.......not looking ahead to the playoffs!

So you're drafting Cook and thinking "backup"? Not sure i like that move, bro. I personally think he's going in the 1st rd....just don't know where. Say we did take him. Imagine the pressure? The MSU slappies would be retarded beyond tolerable with the "play Cook now" chants. I think its a bad fit for him...

If Cook is available in the second I would probably take him.
Or maybe Cardale Jones in the later rounds.

Watching a few injuries across the league has shown the need to improve the backup position. Stafford has done enough to be the starter here next year. He is our best option for 2016.

No, I'm not thinking they SHOULD take Cook.......just that if they did, it should not be to replace Stafford.

That's all.

If I were GM Stafford is my guy in 2016 and beyond......but, I am ABSOLUTELY upgrading the backup QB position this off season....Dan O is terrible.

Shit, I'd trade Washington a 7th for RGIII and be happy as fuck!!!

There are very few options that wouldn't be better than Orlovsky.
