AL Playoff Thread

Detroit's win over Chicago tightens things up in the central. Baltimore also finally lost which has made the WC race a bit closer.

The damn A's don't ever lose. They are only 3 games behind the Rangers. I still think we absolutely have to win the division. I really want no part of that WC game (yes, I'd take it if that's our only way in). But all that game is going to do is probably set you at a severe disadvantage for setting up your rotation for the next round of the playoffs.

Yeah that's been my problem with the one game playoff. I like the concept, I just don't like the one game aspect. Although it's hard to make a case for either scenario IMO. A one game playoff is prone to fluke situations that could decide the game (which could result in a worse team moving on), but if you lengthen it any longer (5+ games) you're putting a bigger strain on the WC winner which could put them at a disadvantage in the opening round vs the 1 seed. I'd really like to see a 3-game playoff to at least avoid the fluke possibilities of a one game playoff, this wouldn't add a lot more games and you're ace could still go in game 1 of the next round if they pitch in the 1st game of the WC series.

It really bugs me that a team could have the 2nd best record in the AL but not make the playoffs (I count the WC game as more of play-in game rather than part of the playoffs).

I hate the 1 game playoff idea, but I also hate the idea of having the other playoff teams possibly sitting around for 3 days and waiting for them to play out a series. This new format brings more teams into the picture but I like the old format...3 division winners and 1 team with the overall best record.

Only change to note is that Detroit and Chicago are now tied for the AL Central lead. In this case they play a one-game playoff to determine the winner, since neither qualify for any WC spot, the loser is out. Detroit would host this playoff game since they have the better head-to-head record over Chicago.

Also, the AL East should be something to watch over the next few days. The Yankees have lost 8 of 12 and their lead has been cut to 2 games over Baltimore and 3.5 games over Tampa.

Tigers fall out of the AL Central tie

Baltimore is now just 1 game back of the Yankees for the AL East lead

Now this scenario is interesting,
Baltimore and NY are tied for the AL East league, they are also tied in record with the A's who do not lead the AL West.

In this case, NY travels to Baltimore for a one-game playoff to determine the AL East winner, Baltimore receives home-field since they have a better record than NY (tied head-to-head). The loser of this game would earn the 2nd wild card spot and travel to Oakland for the wild card playoff.

I almost want to see Tampa tie with NY, Baltimore, and Oakland just to see how crazy this can get.

do they still have the rule that a div winner doesn't play the WC in the first round if they are from the same division?

NY reclaims the AL East lead

Tigers pick up a game in the WC, big series this weekend in LA for the Tigers.

Some big weekend series this weekend overall
NY @ Baltimore - 4
Texas @ Tampa - 3
Detroit @ LA - 3

Big change Tigers are losing ground in the wild card race. And to a team there playing, and is ahead of them!

Bottom line here is this!, should you not be able to get a wild card spot, you really do not deserve to win a Division either!

This offence has got to get off it's butt and start scoring runs, no ifs ands or buts about it. Real simple Tigers are not getting it done!

LA's sweep of Detroit has put them at 1 game back of the 2nd WC spot (along with Tampa). NY has reclaimed 1st in the AL East which leaves Baltimore as the 2nd WC spot leader. Detroit falls to 4.5 back for the WC.

Some more notable series coming up the first half of this week
Detroit @ Chicago (4 games, Sept 10-13)
Tampa @ Baltimore (3 games, Sept 11-13)
Oakland @ LA Angels (4 games, Sept 10-13)

The Tigers could find themselves in a very good position if they win while the other four teams beat each other up.

Gosh....

Fortunately for the Tigers, the White Sox just seem to stink almost as much.

I don't think there's any wild card berth in the future the Tigers this season...far and away the best path is to catch up to and pass the also marginally good White Sox...and in the post season, ya never know...
