Here's an article on the value of sacks in the NFL
https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/02/05/the-overrated-sack/
He brings up some valid points on why sacks aren't all equal, mainly
- Obviously, the more snaps played will eventually lead to a higher sack total
- The time it takes for the rusher to get to the QB can tell a lot about how much that player had an impact, beating your blocker and taking down the QB is quite different than the heart of the D-line forcing the QB out of the pocket to the side of the rushing end, the latter will take more time
I don't know if I would call it overrated, but it's a pretty simplistic stat.
I guess I would equate it to RBI in baseball...the more PAs you have, your RBI total is likely to increase...if more guys get on base, your RBI total is likely to increase...good hitters usually have high RBI totals, poor hitters usually don't have high RBI...however, a high RBI total does not always indicate a good hitter, and likewise, a low RBI total does not always indicate a poor hitter. The stat simply doesn't tell you much and can mislead, using it in conjunction with other stats will give you a better picture.
I don't know if this has much to do with Ziggy, but that's just my input.
