Game 5: Bills @ Lions Thread

that's kind of everyones point. we kinnnnnda gave him a pass for having shitty weapons. So we went out and got more weapons. Now theres a whole set of different excuses. When you constantly have excuses maybe youre just not very good at what you do. which is why most people put him as a top 15-20 qb. Peyton Manning lost half of his oline last year....went to the super bowl.

He's not Manning. That's part of the problem right there lol

sorry...hes 2nd now after matt ryans new deal. still above peyton.

The NFL's Highest-Paid Players 2014

The NFL has reached unprecedented heights thanks to billion-dollar media deals fueled by TV ratings immune to the drops experienced across the rest of the television universe. The league’s 32 franchises are worth $1.43 billion on average, up 23%, and owners are pocketing record profits to the tune of $53 million per club last season. But 53-man rosters and a restrictive salary cap have kept a lid on salaries for the league’s rank and file in recent years. The average player salary of $2.1 million has barely budged over the past four years.

While overall salary growth has been slow, the sport’s stars are still cashing in. The NFL’s salary cap system makes determining the highest-paid player a game of definitions to some degree. You can look at the leader in guaranteed money (Colin Kaepernick: $61 million), base salary (Jay Cutler: $17.5 million in 2014), average annual salary (Aaron Rodgers: $22 million), total contract (Calvin Johnson: $132 million) or endorsements (Peyton Manning: $12 million).

At Forbes, we look at who pocketed the most cash over the last 12 months from all sources: salaries, bonuses (signing, option, roster, workout and playoff), endorsements, appearances and licensing. Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is the NFL’s highest-paid player by that measure with earnings of $43.8 million between June 2013 and June 2014.

The NFL's Highest-Paid Players 2014

#1 Matt Ryan

Total earnings: $43.8 million
Salary/bonuses: $42 million
Endorsements: $1.8 million

Ryan signed a five-year, $103.75 million contract last year with the Falcons that included a $28 million signing bonus and a $12 million option bonus paid in March. The $20.75 million average annual value was the second highest in the NFL behind only Aaron Rodgers at the time of signing (Colin Kaepernick has since surpassed Ryan).

The $20.75 million average annual value was the second highest in the NFL at the time behind only Rodgers’ deal (Kaepernick has since surpassed Ryan’s annual average). Matty Ice bolsters his playing income with nearly $2 million a year from appearances, memorabilia and sponsors Nike, Comcast CMCSA -0.31% and Liquid Nutrition. The Falcons finished a disappointing 4-12 during the 2013 season, but Ryan became the Falcons all-time leader in passing yards in December ahead of Steve Bartkowski.

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford ranks second with earnings of $33 million. Stafford signed a three-year, $53 million contract extension in July 2013, including a $27.5 million signing bonus. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft has paired with wide receiver Calvin Johnson to form a dazzling duo. Stafford holds the all-time NFL QB records for most passing yards and completions over the first 50 starts of a career. Stafford generated $1.5 million annually off the field from an endorsement portfolio that includes Nike, PepsiCo PEP -0.29%, Upper Deck and Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

Peyton Manning completes a clean sweep of QBs in the top three spots with earnings of $27.1 million. Manning added a record fifth MVP trophy and third Super Bowl appearance in 2014, further cementing his legacy as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. The QB landed in Denver in 2012 with a five-year, $96 million contract that requires him to pass an annual physical in order to get paid. Manning didn’t miss a game his first two seasons and passed his physical this March to guarantee his $15 million salary in 2014. Manning is the NFL’s top product endorser; earning $12 million annually off the field from companies like Buick, DirecTV, Gatorade and Papa John’s. Manning became a Papa John’s pizza franchisee in 2012 when he signed a deal to own 25 stores in the Denver area. Manning parted ways with Reebok this year after 12 years together, but added Nationwide to his endorsement portfolio.

Most yards thrown in a single game without a touchdown pass: (443, 12/22/2012)

This is my favorite record...most yards WITHOUT a TD pass. BTW he was 37/56 with 1 INT and they lost the game 31-18. Matt Ryan on the other hand went 25/32 with 4TDs and 0 INTs.

And that's the problem right there Tony. He's a "good" QB. The Lions didn't draft him to be their franchise QB and pay him a ton of money to be "good." Elite level quarterbacks can take talent and make them better, they don't have to constantly need players around them. And people on here have to justify everything about his struggles with excuse making.

The Lions picked up guys like Ebron and Tate to give more around him in case Calvin went down. And look how he responded against Buffalo. He forgot what the hell to do.

Who gives a crap. He's not playing like he's worth over 17m. Plus the next two years he's making 22m a year plus he got a huge signing bonus..

Add this to his originally deal and Matt has made a fortune for doing absolutely nothing.

He's not paid like an elite QB like you all think. He's 10th and like 8th next year. It does matter. And nothing guaranteed base salary wise in the last 2 years of the deal. Meaning probably a new deal.

Stafford was structured low this year because of Suhs massive contract, it goes up next year, and into to 22+ million range the final two years.

His cap hit will be top 5 easily in 2016. Probaly top 3

Like I said. The base is not guaranteed. They will do a new deal before then.

He will be 4th and Luck and Wilson still need deals in 2016. And he's 8th next year

He might actually end up 10th next year or 11th depending on the Wilson, Newton and Luck deals.

You guys exagerrate what he makes. And fail to see the cap increase. 17 million under the old cap, yeah big deal, but this is a new larger amount cap.

It doesn't matter what he's paid. He's your franchise QB. He was the first overall pick. Whether or not he is paid 10 cents or 10 million a year, he needs to start playing like the guy we all expected him to be.

It's his 6th year. Time for him to put up or be on his way out.

2016 and 2017 22.5 million is a lot no matter the cap.

It really doesn't matter if he is 2nd or 8th...he hasn't done shit! He is just a middle of the pack QB that has already made about $81M from the Lions and has lead them nowhere.

Are they sure they will want to do a new deal? Stafford has almost zero incentive to do a new deal unless they pay a boat loa up front, which would tie him to this franchise even longer.

He'd get another big signing bonus and it would help the Lions out again cap wise lowering his number for 3 more years like the last deal. Stafford has alot to prove until then.

They could always restructure the first 22 million year too and then give him a new deal before the last year.

Stafford's number is just fine and he's not paid like an elite QB. 10th in year 2 and 8th in year 3. And he was around there in 2013 as well.
