Hoops vs MSU

From an interview 20 years later:

Though Keshia never heard from the man, she says she did encounter someone who expressed sincere gratitude for her selfless actions."I was downtown at a coffee house back in the day, and a kid came up to me and said, 'Hey, I want to say thanks... That was my dad,'" Keshia recalls.

Adding to MSU's no good, very bad, terrible week, they have Richard Spencer speaking on campus today. link.

Not trying to be mean... this sucks for MSU. this douchenozzle is trying to speak at UM as well, which is also mentioned in the article.

I have no idea who Richard Spencer is...

Sounds like they are handling it right. You handle it right and these things can backfire on the hatemongers.

951d7cee69514b3b8273394ce427fb29

Yeah, MSU seems to have handled it well. "OK, You can come speak... during Spring Break when no one is here."

I have no idea who Richard Spencer is...

White supremacist who has been going around demanding to speak at colleges and suing when he doesn't get his way. OSU denied him, then got sued and lost.

Find me one MSU fan who would take a win over any of those 3 teams vs a win over Michigan and I'll give you a million dollars.

In basketball I'll definitely take a win against any of those 3 over uofm - this year. And I would take the win against dook and unc just about every year - purdue not necessarily, but definitely in years like this. I want them to win every game and I cared more about the BTT this year than most years since we've underperformed and could use the boost from winning the tourney. But in the end, the loss doesn't hurt that much and had we won, it would really only matter if we also won Sunday.

It bothered me way more that we played like crap (like we have for 6+ weeks) and let uofm control the game than actually losing to michigan. Had we won, I would have ranked as our 4th or 5th best win - maybe the 3rd best win considering what happened to ND after Colson got hurt. There are definitely some MSU fans that would rank beating uofm higher but most MSU fans that follow the game would prefer beating better non-rival teams.

I guess you owe gotime a million dollars.

Lol cool story, but I don't think I buy it. It's the classic "downplay the importance of the game" tactic to try and save face after losing. Both sides do it in both sports. We all know how the two fanbases really feel about each other.

Quite honestly, I think the people on this board understand it. When Michigan has lost to MSU, we were sick about it and didn't downplay it.

All of a sudden, the BTT doesn't matter, and the games against UNC, Purdue, and Duke were more important than their in-state rival.

It still amazes me, but I guess it shouldn't. MSU fan still thinks that MSU is better than Michigan. It's nuts. Michigan has won 1 less game than MSU, spanked MSU twice, just spanked Purdue and MSU in back2back days. MSU didn't have to play at PU, at PSU, at Neb, or at UM. They went on the road once against the top 5 in the BIG and got spanked. They have 2 quadrant 1 wins, while Michigan has 7.

Yeah, but 3.5 months ago we beat UNC...

um OK, that's awesome.

It's not like Michigan won the only meeting of the year in AA by 2 points...Michigan dominated MSU twice, once on a neutral court and once in EL.

This should not even be a debate. Just accept that this group of nothing recruits in AA is better than MSU this season. I don't really know how it happened either, but it has.

Michigan is the best team in the big 10 this season RIGHT NOW! Earlier in the season, they were not, but they have improved over the course of the season and are the best at this moment. Sometimes overall record doesn't show what team is better, especially in basketball.

Michigan is the best team in the big 10 this season RIGHT NOW...!

And it doesn't even matter.

What matters is, who's going to be better if they meet in the tournament?

Who knows?

Both are going to be there.

That game will be its own game, if it happens.

And if it does, nothing that happened before will have anything to do with the outcome.

It was nice to see Michigan cut down the net.

I'm thinking about seeing it once more.

And if that happens, I'm thinking about seeing it once more after that.

LOL cool story to avoid paying gotime $1mm.

On a more serious note, it's absolutely true. Of course I wanted to win the game and the loss stings - I'm not downplaying that at all. Last week in the MSU forum I said I cared more about the BTT tournament this year than I have in the past because our season has been a disappointment despite the 28-3 record. But I'd still value wins over dook or unc or a good purdue team more than a win over michigan. It's also true that losing to michigan stings more than losing to dook, but that has more to do with expectations than it does any rivalry. When uofm is better than purdue, then I value the uofm win more - that's almost never the case with unc or dook, but if it was, I'd value it more then.

Do you honestly think that if we beat dook and michigan this year, MSU fans would value that uofm win more? Or if we beat uofm on Saturday, we would value that more than the unc victory? If you do, you're nuts. I would probably value a BTT championship more than the unc win, but if we beat michigan, it would have been our 4th best win of the year.

To me the rivalry will always be there in every sport but it's not everything, particularly in basketball - I'm less rational about the football rivalry.

Tell your fan base to stop pretending that wins over Purdue and UNC mean more than Michigan, because they don't.

And if they do as you claim, don't get pissed off at the Michigan fan base in football if they dismiss your football team, it's the same shit. Crazy how this comes full circle eh?

why don't you tell them. I'm not going to tell them because had we beaten uofm, they would mean more. I can't say don't because we didn't beat michigan this year.

And stop saying "we" - you went to a directional school.

Actually, 99/100 times I make sure to check myself if I slip up and say "we." I probably do that less than the vast majority of the fan base. And in the one you quoted, I didn't say we anywhere.

But yeah, I guess if that makes you feel better? Wake me up when your basketball team wants to come to Michigan's level again. Actually, I think that win over VCU meant a ton more than your boys this year. Hell, at least Texas gave MICHIGAN a good game on their home court. Your boys rolled over like a cheap suit.

Well...it's a hypothetical, parallel universe comparison world.

Today Michigan is ranked ahead of both Purdue and UNC, and really, Duke, Michigan State and Michigan are bunched together in the 4 - 7 spots in both polls.

The loss Saturday to Michigan cost the Spartans a chance to play for the BTT championship.

Purdue's season is over; Duke and UNC's seasons continue; we'll see where they come up in the polls.

But this last loss - it cost the Spartans something tangible; something that the Duke loss didn't.

Saturday's game against Michigan was the most meaningful, and most important game the Spartans had this season - more meaningful than the Duke loss, more meaningful than the Purdue win, more meaningful than the UNC game that actually didn't happen anyway.

So it's kinda hard to fathom valuing hypothetical wins over Duke or UNC or Purdue (this wasn't hypothetical-the Spartans actually won this one) over a win against Michigan makes sense, when not winning against Michigan cost the Spartans the only tangible thing they didn't win so far this year.

I think it's laughable MSU fans are trying to even make the argument that beating a decent-good UNC team at home in November is more important than their rivals at home during the heart of the conference season and the conference tournament.

Guess they've gone old-school Michigan football fan. Who gives a damn about that loss to MSU? They beat Florida, that's all that matters.

maybe this well help you understand. Let's assume for a minute that we beat uofm on Saturday. Under that scenario, we are the 2nd ranked team in the country beating the 4th place B1G team who lost to NW less than 3 weeks ago, had a big win against osu but then barely squeaked by a horrible Iowa team - not exactly a team on a roll heading into the game. Under this scenario, uofm isn't BTT Champions, they didn't beat the #2 team in the country and then beat a very good Purdue team. They don't have momentum of those victories - they're just a better than average team that we were expected to beat. We probably don't even move up in NCAA tournament seeding unless we win the also win on Sunday.

You used the collective "we" in a previous post. I didn't want to make a separate post to correct you.

Although it's out of my control, I'd prefer we remain elite than slip down to uofm's level - enjoy your rest. I would prefer it if we won both those games this year though - just not as much as I would have preferred to beat dook.

Well sadly, you aren't elite. You guys are the Buffalo Bills.

right, but like I said above to dubbs - in the scenario where we beat uofm in the BTT, uofm doesn't beat purdue to win the BTT and they don't move up in the rankings or have any momentum. Again, I don't think the uofm loss in the BTT costs us much if anything. I doubt we would move much in the NCAA seeding without also winning Sunday.
