The "auto-bench." This is confusing as to why fans would complain about this. There is no crystal ball to tell what would definitely happen IF JB didn't bench people for certain amounts of time after they pick up certain fouls.
I ask the same question, which of the 4 losses were caused by the "auto-bench?" I think there was one of the losses where Teske missed significant time in the 2nd half that might've contributed, but again, how do we know that he wouldn't have picked up another foul in the next minute if he was playing and not on the bench? The philosophy has worked in at least 26 games.
Look at the Maryland example with Zavier. He picked up his 3rd foul with about 18:30 to go. It was a very stupid foul about 30 feet from the basket. JB benched him for about 7 minutes. Michigan won the game. People say, "well, damn Zavier didn't get another foul the entire game...see!!" This was only after he was benched. We cannot sit here and say, "Damn! JB should've left him in for the last 18:30, because he didn't commit a foul the rest of the game." That would be impossible to predict. What happens if he doesn't get pulled and picks up foul #4 with 17 minutes to go? You think he would've been as effective as he was for the last 17 minutes with 4 fouls? I doubt it.
Please give examples of when JB should not have benched someone for fouls and it led to a loss.
The philosophy is working. The team is 26-4 and in contention for a very high seed in the tournament and possibly an outright or a share of the big 10 regular season title. I just don't see why fans should be spending so much time complaining about the coaching when it is working.
