Lions cut Burleson

I don't believe his contract details have come out yet. His cap number was around 3MM last year and I doubt a "slight raise" would put it much higher.

It will be less than 3 million. There was dead money from his 5 year contract on that deal. Raiola played for 940 K last year in salary. The bump will be over 940 K. Probably 1.5-2 million in salary on a one year deal.

Never know, he might've agreed to be cut so they could bring him back for cheap. Or he could just not come back at all. Doesn't matter all that much to me.

True I'm not sure I want him back unless he's cheap and for depth. I don't want to see him starting here..

The Delmas cut brings them down to about $122MM, gives them around $5.8MM in cap room (not counting Raiola).

Any that still need to get raises etc? And I'm always confused does the money from the draft come from this or is there separate money for that?

Be aware though...

....Martavius Neloms and his $667 count against the cap next year

So in a nutshell the Lions are about $5.8M under the cap (well probably $4.5M if we guess what Dom is going to make) and they have to replace 6 starters who have been cut or are free agents (Delmas, Young, Pettigrew, Fox, Mathis, Nate)

Also a backup QB

Suh extension looms for 7.5 million in space.

Or Calvin and Tullcoh restructure and Harris cut (7.5 million as well).

Either works or both

Quin,Bush and Jones were 7.5 million in space in 2013.

Waddle will likely replace Fox and Waddle already has a contract. And the link that Grandy posted a few comments above explains the process of signing rookies from the draft and how that's not a dollar for dollar cap situation. So it's not as simple as saying we have to replace 5 starters with $4.5M. We're in a little better shape than your statement would make us out to be, although not great shape.

Also, I'd be surprised if we don't cut Leroy Harris, which saves us a couple million I think.

Hopefully we can have a solid draft. Guys that can perform as rookies.

Lions have plenty of options. Good shape. Active in free agency for 2 free agents (CB/WR/S). Pick 2. 6 draft picks for the others. More undrafted free agents like Waddle. Big bonus.

The potential problem I see, why would free agents pick us over so many other teams?

I'll take a stab at all of these...

Delmas, Young, and Pettigrew will probably be replaced through the draft/FA, unless any of them come back for cheap

Fox wasn't really a starter anyway, Waddle probably starts with Hilliard and a cheap FA/late rounder as another fill-in

Mathis is probably going to be replaced in-house now that the younger backs have another year of experience, they could draft a CB early too

My guess is that Burleson is replaced with a early draft pick

Doable with the cap room they have, but I can't speak to how much depth they will have (or won't have)

New staff to sell the team. Antoine Bethea may have a link to Caldwell. You like Bethea over Delmas?

5 year 23 million deal like Quin got for Clemons. You don't give Delmas a contract like that due to his knees.

This team has a ton of talent, it's not a hard sell.

Scheme, coaches, players, personnel openings, competition...

I could go on, too many reasons to list

I'd say each situation is unique

it won't be because they are a winning organization
it won't be because Detroit is a great place to live in the winter

There are probably only a handfull of teams that FA think are worse destinations than Detroit

They don't have to live here in the winter. Most players go elsewhere.

You have no clue what players think about any playing situation. You only have your own opinion.

It's more than that. They know we don't have a tradition of winning, year after year, decade after decade, coach after coach.

As far as the starting part, so we'll go after players who can start here that wouldn't elsewhere? Not sure I like that.

I just don't see where the sell is..
