Lions listening to offers for Tate and traded to the Eagles

Hate to see him go . Does this mean lions are in give up mode? Not a great way to motivate your team that has been missing in action for 3 of the 7 games this year. Yeah I get it we needed to get something for him . I just have mixed feelings on the trade. I understand its business and had to be done.

My guess is the team/players don't think this is a "give up" move but a lot of the fans will.

I don't think this team was going to make the playoffs with or without Tate. This gives Golladay and Jones more downfield targets. Hell, Riddick can probably run most of Tate's routes.

I think fans understand. 3-4, a WR who will want a big raise - I mea football fans understand the business side of it.

The big problem is he will probably get a 4th comp in FA so how much did we really get for him.. I wonder if there's a chance Philly gets a 3rd round comp?

Some writer made a good point (I think on ESPN). He said since the Lions should be active in FA next offseason they probably wouldn't have gotten a comp pick for losing Tate. But since Philly will be strapped, losing Tate will get them a pick.

I will attach the quote if I find it.

Found it...from Bill Barnwell
The Eagles are successfully exploiting the compensatory pick system in trading a 2019 third-rounder for Golden Tate. Philadelphia probably won't re-sign Tate after the year, but given their cap situation, they're also likely going to sit out free agency. Doing so will net them a comp pick for Tate in the 2020 draft, one which will most likely come in the fourth round. The Lions have $36 million in cap space and major holes on defense, so they're far more likely to spend in free agency this offseason, which would have blocked them from getting a comp pick for Tate.

Thanks. I think it still depends on how Detroit finishes. Players want to sign with a good team that might win. I still think we lose out on free agents because we're Detroit. Do we overpay, get the 3rd tier guys? This isn't a top destination for players. I think we have to go through the draft primarily.

stat padford had a wide open Tate in the middle of the field on 3rd down and took a sack instead. If youre not going to use him may as well trade him. way to go Stat Padford...got GMS fired, coaches, offensive coordinators....now your #1 receiving weapon sent packing. MVP.
He had zero pocket to step into. The entire line failed. So if it got batted in the air out here throws off his back foot and it floats you would be mad about that. There's nothing he can do that you won't be mad at. You weren't even happy with his play against Miami.

I don't think they are banking this cash to trade for Peterson mostly because i don't think Arizona has any interest in trading him. Giants Already said they wouldn't trade Collins. But they cleared money to make moves this off season and hopefully they'll bring in something to make this defense better.

I expect he will get used a lot in Philly. He's perfect for them.

How much cap space we got now? Im starting to think this move is to clear up space for another trade, the defensive variety. Patrick Peterson or Landon Collins please

I think compensatory picks are probably the bigger factor.

The Eagles have almost zero cap room after this season, so when Tate walks and they don't sign anyone, they will get a 4th rounder for him, which isn't so bad when they gave up a third to get him.

The Lions have a ton of likely space, so they are going to spend and spend big, which would probably cost them any picks they might have gotten for guys like Tate.

Tate was a 9,351,250 cap hit this season, according to overthecap.com and nearly half of that is already gone, so figure roughly 4.5mm saved, so since they started the day almost $2mm under the cap, they are about $6.5mm under now... most of that will probably be applied to next season so they can spend even more.

I don't think they have given up. Honestly, I think this is a numbers game.

Golladay goes off one week. Tate the next. Last weekend it was Jones. No matter what, there are only so many balls to throw around, and all three can't get quality catches in any given week.

By trading Tate, now you have Golladay and Jones as the featured guys, with Jones/Powell cleaning up 3-5 catches per game (what ONE of those three receivers would have had in any given week anyway), and you have the chance to get the tight ends more production.

Three amazing WR was a great game plan, until we found a running game, and now Stafford isn't going to throw it on every down any more. Someone is expendable for the picks and comp picks... it just happened to be the 30 year old receiver in the final year of his deal.

It's a pretty understandable choice.

Sounds like Lions players are not all that happy with the deal. Oh well. Maybe it sends a message to the players it is unacceptable not to show up in 3 games. Players should shut up and do thier jobs.

2.7 in cap space extra to rollover
3rd round pick in 2019. Comp pick wouldnt be until 2020 and that is if lions arent active in free agency next offseason, which they will be. Tate will be 31 so wont get ahuge deal so 4th round at end of round was best scenario for the comp pick

We just got that 3rd back we traded for hand. If you can get a golladay in 3rd you can replace tate. Powell gets a shot now

Hate to see Tate go, but this is business. Lions still might make a minor move to pick up wr depth before the trade deadline, but expect it to be minor. The offense is going to be ok, and this helps us going forward to build up the defense.

Can we get rid of Abdullah please . Just cut him for a bag of donuts or peanuts or better yet Cracker Jacks or Carmal Popcorn.. He just makes to many mistakes.

I agree. Play better and win more games and this trade won't happen. I like the trade but it still surprises me. Didn't think they had the brass balls to do it.

In addition to removing Tate?s contract, approximately $3.7 million, from the salary cap, the Lions also restructured Marvin Jones? contract. That freed up an additional $2.2 million. The Lions now have around $7.6 million in cap space.

I hate phuccking Philthadelphia, it was the HQ of one of my former employers, who laid waste to the company and took thousands of jobs away from the Midwest, and their sports fans are assholes. I almost had to move there, but my job wouldn't have lasted more than a year or two afterward anyway. Tate was my favorite player, but if he signs with the Bears, Vikings, or especially Packers in the offseason, then he will become an enemy.
