Petti

According to Spotrac that leaves the Lions with 2.226MM in cap space. That lines up pretty close to the 2.554MM the Lions are expected to use for draft picks (I don't know if Spotrac includes this or not).

I would imagine the Lions are pretty much done in FA unless Suh signs an extension.

What about that S who wants to come here, do we have room for him? It'd be nice to get a S before the draft..

He made about 700k last year, I can't imagine him getting a huge bump in pay by signing here. They'll probably do some more shifting around of cap numbers before signing draft picks.

Pettigrew contract details out

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/detroit-lions/brandon-pettigrew/

4 years/$16 million

$8 million guaranteed (includes $4 million signing bonus)

The $4MM bonus is spread out over the full 4 years ($1MM/year)

Base Salary
2014: 1.2MM (guaranteed)
2015: 2.8MM (guaranteed in March of 2015)
2016: 3.65MM (not guaranteed)
2017: 4.35MM (not guaranteed)

He has a $2.2MM cap hit this upcoming season

He becomes a cap savings in 2016 if things don't work out (although technically he's a cap savings if they release him before March of 2015 I believe)

That is a pretty damn good Lion friendly contract. However, if he actually does get his shit together, it becomes an outstanding deal.

Not a huge fan of Pettigrew, but he is an above average TE and this is a good contract. We risked taking a big step back at the TE position without him. Now we draft CB or DE IMO.

2014 Ranks for Pettigrew's Contract (among TEs)
#22 in cap hit
#26 in base salary
#15 in average salary

Holes? Very little. Safety we'll get Ihedigbo. CB and WR still have a draft. Nobody's nuts are in a vice. Can restructure people too for more room. Suh has no leverage since we can make moves even with him at a huge number.

I love how people say Suh has no leverage, that is just a ridiculous statement.

Lions handled his huge cap number. They have the luxury to get a deal done all offseason and don't need him to get the draft class in. Suh will get top DT market value.

Suh can also play out the the year and opt out after the season and stick the Lions for a 10M cap hit for next season on his way out the door.

Still leaves them with no cap room to make trades or sign any vets cut after the draft.

Still has the Lions up against it. Lions have nothing to gain by waiting for him with his huge cap number.

You do realize the Lions can create cap space without a Suh extension. They can restructure Calvin, Tulloch or Quin. Therefore, Suh's cap number gives him no leverage.

It is not all about cap space this year for Suh that he has levarage with, its next season too.

Not sure if you would want to restructure Calvin since you have been kicking the can down that road already, look at his cap numbers coming up, over 20M the next 3 seasons.

Restructuring deals is what got them into this mess

Lions can easily let him go next year and handle the 9 million in dead money. They can easily trade him too and handle 19 million in dead money this year.

Restructuing deals doesn't create a mess. I know exactly how much it would add to each year. Not a mess. 800 K each year for Calvin for example. Not a mess for 3.2 million in savings this year.

Do some research, learn about it, then stop with this mess talk.

No matter what you say it does cause problems down the line. You don't have to call it a mess but it does cause a problem.

No it doesn't. 800 K is nothing. It's not a problem for Calvin who we don't cut.

from MLive's Justin Rogers (http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2014/03/after_re-signing_brandon_petti.html)
If the Lions do need space, cap space is fluid. The team could perform simple contract restructures, most notably with Calvin Johnson. By reducing the wide receiver's base salary to $1 million in 2014, it would clear more than $3 million in 2014 with a minimal impact on future years.
small restructures won't have the same impact as the massive restructures that you're thinking about. this is clearly an option for a small bump (considering there's nobody really left in FA) if we don't get Suh extended.

I think LKP is secretly Mayhew. Everything is fine well just restructure guys 50 times. Also I how the cap is freaking fluid because Don Carey at Safety is the exact opposite of fluidity.

Swami is right... Suh not only has leverage, he has ALL the leverage.

The team isn't going to part ways with him, and he knows it, they know it, the league knows it, and even we fans know it. Doesn't matter if it makes sense or not, it's just not going to happen.

So they can either hammer out a deal soon, or franchise him next season and try again. The ball is in his court entirely.

Trust me on this, if this team paid Avril franchise money, they will pay Suh a STUPID amount of money to keep him here. $22M hasn't even come close to scratching the surface of what they will pay if they don't work out a deal.

can't negotiate without the agent, who was just recently hired... calling someone a POS over a situation he had zero control over is pretty ignorant on your part... then again, it's just par for the course for you and your hatred from Meyhew.

The agent was signed a week ago, if it was going to be done it would have been done. Another Mayhew balls up a la Avril.
