Suh suitors

He can temporarily be given the franchise tag and a long term deal can be made ASAP. No bidding war then.

Cutting Jones, Tulloch and Bush to do it probably wouldn't make too many people upset.

I don't see the lions using the franchise tag but rather the transition tag, doesn't change the amount but allows detroit to match another teams offer (which can be tricky), if o'course he isn't signed in the meantime.

Good call. Transition tag is the way to go I think.

The argument doesn't fit, because you are arguing whether or not we've won with Suh. We haven't won with anyone. We didn't exactly win with Barry Sanders.

It's the NFL, there is no moneyball here. Someone, on every team, is getting paid bank. Usually more than one someone. The NFL not only has a salary cap now, but a salary floor. When you have nearly $150MM in payroll to meet, and 53 guys to pay, you can either have a team of $3MM players and be the worst team in the league or you can have a team full of $1.5MM and $2MM players, and a few superstars.

Again, not arguing that Suh can't be paid $27MM next season. He simply can't be. It's insane. I'm saying that you can never use the argument that "we haven't won with him" when it comes to teams that just don't win titles... Lions, Browns, etc...

We would have no players ever, because we don't win with anyone.

The point was, it obviously flew over your head :p, is that there is no point in way overpaying a guy for what amounts to not being able to add other players to improve. To get to a SB. It wasn't meant as 'well we can't win so they're all useless to us..' I wouldn't have said that if he want fair market DT value.

I can do this..:spin:

We don't need much in free agency. Suh back, Mathis back, Prater back

Then draft well.

And if they can't get a deal done? They haven't been about to get a deal done the last year why would tagging him help?

Like the other posters said, transition tag. But that has a few difficulties as well. Assuming he signs one of these and a contract gets done..can't use the tag again until contract is over. Probably not a huge problem..and if he signs the transition off sheet or no one wants to sign him..he'll get paid that 27 for the year.

If they can't get a deal done, trade is an option still with franchise tag.

At 27 million? Because there's no guarantee a team can get a deal done so what kind of trade could you get in return..

If he doesn't want a fair offer, let him walk and move on.

In any event it's all speculation. I don't see anything that says others would pay him more than Watt. I could see him being okay with less but tbh I'm not really sure he want's to be here..

didn't a team do that a couple years ago where they put language in the contract you need to match that makes it harder for the current team to match.

If your willing to have a $35mil number on Suh next year, Im not sure how teams could structure anything worse for 2015, and then u get him for more than one year, prefer it over franchise tag, your matching market value with transition

The NFL has a rule now that specifically blocks any contract with the "poison pill" involved.

Steve Hutchinson was the all-time example of a "poison pill" contract. When he signed with the Vikings, they offered him a six year, $49MM contract. The money became 100% guaranteed if he was not the highest paid lineman on the team.

The Seahawks were paying Walter Jones slightly more than the offer, so had they matched it, Hutchinson's money would have become immediately guaranteed, making it nearly impossible for the Seahawks to match.

Later the Seahawks retaliated with a poison pill to Nate Burleson. He was given a clause in his contract that paid him an extra $75MM if he played more than four games a year in Minnesota, which would be impossible if he played for the Seahawks, but would have crippled the Vikings cap had they matched it.

During the last CBA, both the players and the NFL agreed to language that would allow the NFL to void any deal with a poison pill in it, at the NFL's discretion, so it really can't be done any more.

Well, multiple experts are saying the cap will go up by at least $10MM next season.

So I guess if they franchise Suh, we know where that money is going.

Cap goes up, players get more money and fans have to pay more for stuff. The American way..

well, I won't contribute any of my money. I don't go to games and don't buy any NFL merchandise. I own one Lion's shirt...it's a golf shirt...the same one that the coaching staff wore but that was a gift from a friend of mine that worked for them.

I didn't say everyone did but as far as the ones who go to games and such..yep.

Not a clue on how Jerry could do it but don't be surprised if Dal makes a run for Suh...
