The ?Way too Many Bowl Games? 2018-2019 Season Thread

A lot of chatter for an 8 team playoff. Most of the other "contenders" got beat in their bowl games...along with ND and OU.

Right.

I was talking about playing Clemson or Alabama, or playing a power five conference schedule for a whole season.

It's obvious what you were talking about Tinsel. UCF did fine and showed they belonged in a game with LSU, a team that finished somewhere in the middle of the SEC.

Michigan did not show it belonged in a game with a team that finished somewhere in the middle of the SEC, but I don't know what that has to do with this idea concerning UCF. I guess since we're fans of Michigan, we can't objectively comment on UCF?

UCF showed that it probably did not belong in a playoff with Clemson and Alabama. I mean, losing to LSU probably means that a team wouldn't hang with Clemson or Alabama.

Speaking of "too many bowls" the WaPo just reported that the chairman of the Outback Bowl makes over $1MM a year to do nothing but schedule that game. (link)

some choice quotes:

Among the 10 wealthiest bowl games in terms of revenue, the Outback Bowl ranks eighth in charitable giving since 2000, according to financial records and interviews, with $500,000 donated, all in the last two years.

this same guy is SOLELY responsible for the trend of shamelessly naming bowls after their corporate sponsors:
McVay lured Outback away from the Gator Bowl by agreeing to a then-novel concession: The game would be re-named the Outback Bowl ? not the Outback Hall of Fame Bowl ? preventing media outlets from dropping the sponsor?s name when discussing the game.

He basically does nothing all year:
In defending McVay?s soaring pay, former board chair Schember cited his negotiating prowess. While other bowls hire consultants to hammer out major contracts, McVay handles all negotiations with ESPN, Outback, the Big Ten and SEC himself, saving the bowl hundreds of thousands of dollars in fees.

Those contracts are up for negotiation just every four or six years, however, raising questions about McVay?s major duties in the intervening years.

but wait...
?It?s not a situation where he sits on his thumbs for three years,? Schember said. ?He goes up to Chicago a lot [Big Ten headquarters] . . . he goes up the SEC offices . . . it?s an important job, maintaining those relationships.?

So he has to take some league officials out to a few high-priced lunches in Chicago and Atlanta maybe once or twice a year? (doubt that's on his own dime!)

So yes, he basically does nothing.

I've negotiated endorsement and sponsorship deals with sports teams... it's not that much work. A few hours here and there for a couple weeks. If both sides are under pressure to get it done, it can be wrapped up with a couple days' work.

Nationalize bowls, give the revenue back to the community. You could pay a board of a few individuals $50K each per year, and a lawyer $100K every couple years to do the same thing.

pay the players. hey, maybe that will incentivize them to care!

Sounds like you?re well your way to be becoming a fat cat yourself.

I wish...

I guess I'm on the wrong side in these negotiations.

*stares out window and dreams of making $1MM/year to work only once a month every 3 years*

That's funny, and not surprising. I don't it's ever been in doubt that the fat cats running the bowls have a pretty good deal going.

Like I said in another thread, bowl games are corporate jackoff sessions.

Looking back, I was pretty happy not watching our bowl game, and not just because we completely shit the bed and pissed ourselves.

Don't blame any players for not playing in these, and kinda hope they all go away in our lifetime. We'll all be better off.

Exactly. The power 5 need to split off and become their own thing. Consistently good teams from smaller conferences can be absorbed into the power 5. Make a real 16 team playoff for their postseason.

Having the power 5 break off from the other 5 smaller conferences would be great for fans of major college football. I would love it if power 5 conferences would only schedule other power 5 schools. The other 5 conferences (AAC, MAC, C USA, M West & Sun Belt) could create their own 16 team playoff. See if those 5 conferences could sustain themselves without the power 5.

they'd probably shrink and/or be like another FCS; some schools would ditch their money-losing football programs, without getting payoffs from bigger schools.

would be a good thing; too many shitty programs and bowls as it is.

I agree that there are too many shitty football programs. Most colleges shouldn't be spending millions of dollars on football. There are so many programs that are partially funded by student fees...paid for by students that mostly don't give a rat's ass about football.

Ball State for sure. Student last year were posting stickers around campus saying "Free Therapy not Free Football" Kinda funny but its true. No way they should waste the money that they do.

But think of all those poor meathead football coaches who will have to go back to being regular high school gym teachers, instead of the highest paid public employees in each state!

Have you no shame, sir?

on the bright side, think of all of those stupid jocks that couldn't even get into school. They could go into the trades instead. We are very short on carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and welders. MAYBE some of those guys could fill those jobs. Also, if they get rid of football scholarships they could get rid of 80 women's athletic scholarships as well. It would be a win-win.

Now, I?m no economics guru...but I?m gonna go way out on a limb and guess that programs that don?t operate at a surplus are NOT the ones who employ the highest paid public employees in their state.

I don?t where you live but in Southern California we have no shortage of trade workers at all.

We have thousands of them streaming across the border every day.

where I live a union carpenter starts at $28 per hour (that does not include a similar amount that goes towards benefits)

The nearest border to me is the Canadian border, but that would be a long swim. Plus, they live in a utopia where they all get free healthcare. Why would they want to leave?

From what I can find it, Ball State football is not subsidized by student fees but subsidizes itself along with non-revenue athletics. Some coed on campus and her friends started putting those stickers up wanting money from the athletic department for additional counseling for students that were coping with the stress of preparing for finals.

More snowflake shit.

Bitch be Crazy

Bitch be Crazy II

EDIT: My bad; I dug a little deeper and found that Ball State and other MAC Athletic Departments might be subsidized by student fees.
