Tigers acquire Omar Infante and Anibal Sanchez

Yeah Ichiro to the Yankees makes me gag.

Glad to have Infante back...never thought he was given a fair shake the first time he was with the team, now he SHOULD be starting 2B more often than not.

Assuming his first start will be Saturday @Toronto, where he'll likely face fellow Venezuelan Henderson Alvarez...

Saturday? Infante should be in tomorrow.

Why would they wait to play Infante until Sat?

Seem to remember a similar quote days before Prince deal went down.
I tend to believe it. Where else would we realistically upgrade? Corner OF? We're gonna have too many outfielders when Dirks comes back, and we'll have to figure out what to do with DY/Boesch when VMart comes back to take over as DH too.

Which package would seem better?

Garza/Barney or Sanchez/Infante

From the looks of the talks between the Dodgers and Cubs atm for Garza it would seem the package we sent the Marlins probably would have been enough to obtain Matt Garza and possibly Barney as well.

I guess the plus side would be we would of been assured of having Garza a 2nd year unlike Sanchez only assured of being with us the remainder of this season.

I mean Sanchez will get his first start...oops...used the pronoun before specifying the person. :p

There's only 21 2b qualified though.

Cano, Hill, Phillips, Pedroia, Uggla, Kinsler, Walker, Murphy, Altuve and Kipnis are all guys I'd take over him just to start with. I'd say middle of the pack. He's an upgrade though, but that's not saying much.

You have to understand the impact though. We're going from dead last in production from 2B to a guy that's top ten. That's a huge upgrade for us.

5th in UZR/150 for qualified 2B this season with 7.9 and 6th last year with 7.3.

I'm not gonna bother compiling the defensive stats from the carousel of 2nd basemen the Tigers have had these past two seasons, but it's probably not as good.

If anything, we'll finally have consistency at 2nd base.

My point wasn't whether it was an upgrade. I've even stated it was. I was pointing out that Dombrowski stated he was one of the best 2b in baseball. I just mentioned about 10 guys off the top of my head i'd list above him. I feel better about 2b now than I did a couple hours ago, that's for sure. Just thought DD's comment was a bit of a reach.

For what it's worth Infante has a +1.2 OWAR and a +0.8 DWAR.

Raburn and Santiago combined were -1.7 OWAR and a -0.4 DWAR. So we're theoretically gaining 4 wins a year or almost 2 wins the rest of the season with this exchange, although Santiago will still get some time. Infante's +.8 DWAR at 2nd base is good for 7th in the majors among qualified players. Infante is a significant upgrade defensively.

Incidentally, Placido Palanco has a +0.4 DWAR playing 3rd this year and had a +0.9 DWAR in 2009 at 2nd for the Tigers. Hmm.

Wonder how DD sold JL on this one. Infante was always in Jim's doghouse or at least it seemed that way. We now have an official number two hitter and greatly shrunk the hole between first and second. Sanchez has no hit stuff and I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised. I do not think Turner is going to amount to anything. In my opinion we traded Brantley for Infante and a rental (Sanchez).

i agree about the brantley for infante part. The sad thing is Turners value dropped so much we traded him for a 6 mo rental lol. Should have traded him when his value was higher.
