Tigers and MLB 2018 offseason

Who's bitching about payroll.. It's not like 180m any more. As far as a better year, possibly but* (edit) no guarantee. It's not like this ml guys are certainties. I'm all for bringing young guys up as early as possible but they decided to go this route.. No big deal.

Mitch, Tom is always bitching about high priced players and payroll. What is the difference if you have $180 Mil payroll with $12 Mil pitchers who cannot pitch, or $90 Mil payroll with $6 Mil pitchers who cannot pitch? The lack of value is the same and the same argument would apply.

Soto hasn't pitched above A ball. Turnbull above A ball hasn't pitched particularly well. Carpenter I don't see as a "sure thing." In-fact he stinks. Of the 4 Hall is the one that deserves to be brought up and I suspect he will get his chance..

I was gonna suggest the same thing , fuck it why not . Toronto is paying his entire salary . 1 year , he will want to prove himself , could be trade bait again or resign for 2-3 years if he is his old self .

I just don?t get it . When Mr I. was Alive he would sign top free agents. I wish the team would get sold. I just do not trust this management to fix this mess. I hope I am wrong but there has to be a few signings to show the fans that you in fact give a crap about winning . Yes I understand we need to restock the minors through lossing but I just do not like it. Espically watching all those ex-tigers in the playoffs and on Boston winning rings.

Mr. I is the one who put them in the situation they are in right now. While I don't have a lot of faith in the management (AA, etc.), I have no real reason to not believe that Chris Illich isn't doing what he is supposed to be doing. This team franchise to be re-built from the bottom up. There is no reason to sign top free agents at this time. Maybe dip your feet in the water in 2 or 3 years when the farm system is built back up. Until then, the Tigers brass needs to sell the fans on a re-build.

I know. I just hate watching a team that has no shot at the playoffs. Plus I just do not like how they are building the team. They have never taken into consideration comerica park. This team needs obp guys, and gap to gap line drive hitters. Plus a top flight defense, and pitching . Finally maybe a good pen. Glad to see the defense impoved last season. Just hate to see the next threes seasons. Probably be 100 loss teams sadly.

This upcoming season will be another 100 loss season and possibly the following 2. They have some starting pitching prospects. If 2 or 3 pan out, they might be in decent shape there. The farm system has no hitters to speak of. That's going to take some time. Re-building is a tough proposition. It is even more difficult when you have untradeable guys like Zimmerman and Miggy on the team.

Restore the roar, 2024

Jordy Mercer agreed to a one-year, $5.25 million deal with Detroit on Wednesday, Jon Heyman of FancredSports reports.

Across 117 games this past season, Mercer slashed .251/.315/.381 with six home runs, 39 RBI and two stolen bases.

Better than not having a SS unless we also have a stud IF down in the minors.

Why! Year in Year out, other team, put up very good teams The Cards seem to have a good team most of the time. They have a farm system that never quits. Most teams build from within, trade off players when not needed, many reasons. I'll go back to trading three for one too many times as well. But really how many players have the Tigers drafted that made MLB rosters?
There bread and butter has been trading garbage for better players. And those days are catching up to them as teams are getting tired on getting nothing and giving something. They have done somewhat ok in getting some free agents, but FA;s should be complement's to make a TEAM better.
In fact Grandma's Cards have turned their 2012 team over with only a hand full of players left. Teams rebuild and retool on the run all the time. This team was built to complete now, a FA in the pen could have done wonders. Of course Cabrera injury did put a stumble in the path. Zimmerman's really has not work out so far. Trading off 25% of the team, that has played on a world series team the last two seasons has not worked as well.
And now paying for questionable pitching when they have some Turnbull, Hall, Carpenter and others.
So yea I got to ask why.

nice...should keep them in the running for the #1 overall pick next year.

maybe, could be, keeping to the current plan. Something close to that.
Well now; They now signed three roster spots. Little room for the Kids. When are the minor's going to play. Kind a shows how bad the farm system is in even with all the new faces.
This out fit amazes me. Just when you think you got them figured out. They throw a kite in the air without a tail.

Cards are different. The best run franchise year in year out.

Branch Rickey once told the cards don't let a Star die on your Roster. Or something like that. On how has that worked put for the Angels with Albert, Cabrera now, jury out, upon injury recovery?, A-Rod. Wait a minute,
Cabrera retires, and hired him as the batting coach. Now there a thought.

A point a wanted to make. The players who you want to delay their service time is the 21-24 year olds. Delaying 25-27 year old minor leaguers who are on the 40-man roster is just plan dumb. You are missing out on their "peak" years. I am not saying all of those guys will turn out. But by not playing them, and giving those opportunities to stiffs, you delay in knowing what you have and what you still need.

In 2012, DET gave 23-yr old Drew Smyly an opportunity despite only 1 year in the minors and nothing above AA. Injuries have derailed his career. Justin Verlander only spent 1 year in the minors. There is a wide range of MLB players who have gone from single A to the Majors. Certainly, timing is everything and I do not suggest this for every prospect or even our high end prospects.

In 2018, there were 29 MLB pitchers 24 or under (4 alone with the Cards) that pitched at least 70 Innings. Luis Severino, Edwin Diaz, Walker Beuhler, Josh Hader, Lance McCullers Jr., Zach Eflin, Luke Weaver, Jordan Hicks. These guys generally spent little to no time at AAA, let alone AA.

In 2018, there were 42 MLB positon players (3 alone with the Cards) with at least 300 PA that were 24 or under.

Of these 71 MLB players that were 24 or under, DET had only 1 (Candelario) and the Cards had 7. For a team that is rebuilding, you would think we would see more. In 2019, I doubt that changes much if any. We signed two aging starters and a 32 yr old bottom of the barrel SS. This, despite the plethora of minor league starting pitchers and trading for no less than 4 minor league SS over the last 3 years, most with rave reviews by the Tigers. Even JaCoby Jones was a SS at the time he was traded for.

Sergio Alcantara
Dawel Lugo
Jose King
Isaac Paredes

Are we all of a sudden going to go with a team full of rookies? Of course not. And as pointed out, you cannot go through the season with just 5 starters. The average team starts 12 different pitchers during the season. Signing two crap veterans will not change that fact. But instead of getting 10-15 starts to see what they have, they might only get 5 stats, which is hardly a good sample size. Ultimately, the difference in pitchers for those 10 starts is negligible if prospect fails. If he succeeds, the gains are enormous.

I agree. When you were talking about hindering development by not calling up the prospects, I thought you were talking about the 5 top pitching prospects. These older guys (25-27) you speak of, sure, give them a shot. The Tigers are going to lose 100 games anyway...let's see if one of them can catch lightning in a bottle. If not, cut them loose or send them back to Toledo.
