Tired of talking about 2013 and before.....

And now Houston is gone...and we did nothing to replace him. Which means were hoping and praying that slay improves. This is a top 25 secondary and as soon as slay or mathis goes down....its a top 32 secondary.

Injured Houston was the biggest problem.

Slay will easily develop and Mathis and Quin played well. Ihedigbo can limit the mistakes more than Delmas.

Top 10 secondary.

Best CB in college football in 2013, vs a guy who played for Miss State that was shredded by the 4 ranked teams they encountered. Basically the best player on a defense that was the best in the country. And dear lord, he actually PLAYED well, he's not just a guy that's got great measureables.

He wasn't even the best cb on his own team at miss st....most people had banks over him and Slay was a late riser due to his "measurables"...for whatever that means lol. All banks had to do is touch durham with 2 fingers and he went flying through the air spinning while throwing the football back into play for the bucs to recover....now THAT is a cb!

Once again mayhew has to be the smartest guy in the room....

Banks was awful last year. Worst coverage in the league other than Josh Robinson.

Slay was the right choice wiht way more upside.

Other than having Burleson hurt, and Young playing decent, Stafford's "weapons" were about the same this last season vs 2011. Still has the best WR in the game. Still has Pettigrew (2nd leading receiving yards in 2011). Actually had a much stronger running attack last season, with both of those guys being big threats out of the backfield. Oh, and had one of the best protecting lines in the NFL.

Ultimately, the difference is Young vs Durham, and Burleson missing time. He's got enough. He needs to prove that he can make others around him better. You don't need stars at the 2nd and 3rd WR spot. That's why guys drop into those slot roles from obscurity and become decent options, the QB actually gives them a chance instead of gunning it 900 feet over their head.

Durham is pure dog shit. Don't even start with the Pettigrew bullshit either. Burleson was a huge disappointment as a Lion. Broyles, Ross, Ogletree......do i really need to continue?

Healthy CJ, Tate, Bush, Bell, Ebron and a 2nd year Fauria should spell success for this team. Still a bit worried about who steps up as our #3 WR this year. I hope it's not Durham or Ogletree. Maybe Fuller makes the jump?

Tony, they have a #1 that is going in the HOF. They have a #2 before the draft even began with Tate. As much as we all get annoyed with Pettigrew's drops, the dude caught 777 yards in 2011, he was their second leading receiver. If he figures out the drops, he can be a halfway decent option. They have two RBs who catch the ball well. Like I said, you can go team by team, and see that those #2s aren't world beaters, and they sure as hell don't need a superior #3. Not to mention he's got an O-line that blocks better than pretty much every other NFL team. Time for him to start improving others, not throwing more people at him to cover up his deficiencies.

There's enough on this team prior to the draft with the addition of Tate. Drafting a skill/slot TE is overkill when other positions need MUCH more work and depth.

Even having time to digest the draft pick for months, I'm still disgusted with it. I think it was a classic Millen-type "I'm smarter than every guy in the room" pick. It reeked of him. My opinion won't change on that. He better prove it, and in a hurry. That's why he was drafted.

CJ isn't getting any younger. And if people actually think Tate could fill in as a #1 if Calvin went down, they're delusional. The rest of our WRs are jokes.....really really bad ones at that. I'm sick of hearing so and so is gonna step up this year. Show me!! Hence, ONE of the reasons why they drafted Ebron. He's got a Jimmy Graham/ Vernon Davis feel to him. He's a threat. I will admit, i can almost guarantee you they were drafting Gilbert before the Browns snatched him up. So, the Lions weren't reaching for a Dennard or Fuller who dropped in the draft. The Lions had a short list and neither Dennard or Fuller were on it. You can't get mad at the organization for the Ebron pick. Their hand was forced to get another weapon .....theres nothing wrong with that.

And Mayhew reportedly tried his ass off to trade for Patrick Peterson a few years ago. So don't tell me they don't care about the secondary. And wtf have the Cardinals done anyways since he's been there? Not much...that's what.

I hate that this thread turned into a clone of the last 3 threads. Ready for this shitty fucking off season to be done. Wake me up for week 1.

Lol it gives me something to do at work. Even in the off-season, this board is way more active than all the others.

Pettigrew may very well have the most yards out of all our TEs. Fauria will remain a special situation/novelty player. Ebron, based on 1st year TE history, will struggle to put up big numbers.

If Pettigrew is back to 700 yards and mid 60% completion (like 2010 and 2011) then Ebron wouldn't have to do that much.

Tate 750 yards like Burleson 2011. Calvin 1,600. That just leaves the Titus Young 2011 production mark. 600 yards and 6 TDs for Ebron on 80 some targets.

And with Bush/Bell/Fauria/actual slot WR playing, Ebron may not even need to do that.

But that's a big if with Pettigrew back to 700 yards. Ebron should get more targets than Pettigrew.

And this is assuming we need 5,000 yards of passing and 41 TDs again.

Too many TEs and other options on the Lions roster for Pettigrew too get 700 yards. I'm thinking maybe 30 catches for him next year.

I agree. Pettigrew won't be a Lion for long. Terms in his contract prove that....costs nothing to release him after next year.

Average Stafford year of 4,600 yards. Improved running game and different coach 4,500 for even number.

Calvin - 1,600
Tate - 800
Various WR - 300
Pettigrew - 500
Ebron - 500
Fauria - 200
RBs - 600

An interesting array of Targets. RB's will likely get more yards than that - at the expense of either Tate or the TE's.

In your prediction we spent a top ten pick on a TE that averages about 33 yards a game. Sounds about right.

If we add all these pieces and still we are throwing for the same average we always had it's a failure. With this offense 4,500 yards is a bust. We better throw for about 5,500. We better be Broncos 2.0.

Most Excited to see? The peanut vendor in section 123. He's probably going to complete more passes than Stafford.

Least excited to see? The peanut vendor in section 212. He's got a noodle arm.

.. more seriously though, I'm stoked about Ebron, and wondering how often he splits out wide.

Least excited to see? Bush. Reggie was brought here to be a feature back, and he's getting paid like one, but losing playing time to a guy we picked up off the garbage heap.

Don't get me wrong, I like Bell a lot... but with him already in house, did we really need Reggie at the price they got him at? It wasn't a bank breaking contract, but a few million in free cap room might have brought in a corner this year, and our secondary SUCKS.

ill cry. And mayhew should lose his job. Then ill be happy again...

even kool aid drinking lkp pegs ebron for like a 600 yard season lol....I forsee a "worst top 10 pick of all time" thread by week 8.

I don't give a fuck what position youre football card says you are.....if youre selected top 10 to be a playmaker in THE most pass happy offense in the NFL you better fucking produce more than 600 yards or it was an absolute waste. I can pick an undrafted guy right now from the college of Charleston ( I don't even know if they have a football team) and I can guarantee he would get 600 yards in this offense if were still throwing the ball 600+ times a year.

I think it was to bring in a Best clone, nothing more.

Exactly. He better be the next Jimmy Graham. These guys would be happy if he turned out to be next Jim Dray.

The first year Graham started at TE full time in this offense (his second year in the league...what Ebron will be doing this year) he produced 1300 and 11 on 150 targets. The Koolaide man should be predicting at least 1000 and 8.

The problem with those comparisons is that New O didn't have Calvin Johnson. I would contend that the offense can be more successful by producing fewer passing yards. Ebron and Pettigrew keeping linebackers honest should help the run game.

I don't know - I do think Detroit fans will be screaming at Ebron often this season as he drops more passes than Pettigrew did a couple seasons ago.

The NFL averages about 2 TEs a year with 900 yards or more. Expecting Ebron to be top 2 as a rookie is dumb. Also writing him off before a rookie year, midway through a rookie year or right after a rookie year is beyond dumb. I don't want to see any Ebron bust posts until after 2015 if it even happens. Took Verrnon Davis until his 4th year and he was a top 10 pick too.

Ebron get some slack his rookie year. This offense is loaded with weapons so he might not get enough targets for 1,000 yards.

We need him to be a matchup nightmare no matter the yardage and produce 650+. Way over 650 is a huge bonus. And with Calvin and Fauria and our rushing TDs I'm not concerned that much about Ebrons TDs just yet.
