Tired of talking about 2013 and before.....

And Ebron's catch rate will be just fine. It was good in college. His separation ability will make for easier catches. 6-7 drops like Pettigrew is fine if Ebron is still catching more balls than Pettigrew due to separation and not pass deflections due to tight coverage (like on Pettigrew).

The problem with those comparisons is that New O didn't have Calvin Johnson. I would contend that the offense can be more successful by producing fewer passing yards. Ebron and Pettigrew keeping linebackers honest should help the run game.

I don't know - I do think Detroit fans will be screaming at Ebron often this season as he drops more passes than Pettigrew did a couple seasons ago.

The NFL averages about 2 TEs a year with 900 yards or more. Expecting Ebron to be top 2 as a rookie is dumb. Also writing him off before a rookie year, midway through a rookie year or right after a rookie year is beyond dumb. I don't want to see any Ebron bust posts until after 2015 if it even happens. Took Verrnon Davis until his 4th year and he was a top 10 pick too.

Ebron get some slack his rookie year. This offense is loaded with weapons so he might not get enough targets for 1,000 yards.

We need him to be a matchup nightmare no matter the yardage and produce 650+. Way over 650 is a huge bonus. And with Calvin and Fauria and our rushing TDs I'm not concerned that much about Ebrons TDs just yet.

If Ebron is a match up nightmare Calvin should easily crack 2k or we have 2k rushing like Mac says. If we have an average offensive year with Ebron he's a bust...either his numbers go up or everyone else's do, I don't care...but if he's not making an impact until year four, everyone will be fired by then just like everyone was fired by Vernon Davis' fourth year. Actually I love this prediction. Ebron can be our Vernon Davis, everyone gets fired, we focus on defense and the run game, we actually don't stink by 2020.

Mayhew getting fired would be the worst thing for this organization. I agree Ebron needs to have an impact by year 2. But we aren't relying solely on him. The Lions have plenty of weapons. He will help Tate and the run game for sure but they still have to block well too and Tate still has to beat one on one (which both will happen). I have confidence Tate and the run game will produce because of Ebron. And Ebron will give us 650 at least.

And I've given a yardage breakdown before. Calvin doesn't have to crack 2,000 for this offense to be very successful.

That's the whole problem with this Ebron discussion. People who did not want Dennard or Clinton-Dix leaned on the fact that it takes a defensive back 2-3 years to develop. However, with Ebron, we aren't allowed to be critical if he's not a game changer in year 1, and it's okay for him to take a year or two to pan out.

Ebron better be a game changer from day 1. That's why he was drafted. Team wants to win now. They want that explosive offense. If this offense is anything less than stellar (damn the excuses, injuries), either Mayhew needs to get canned, or it's time to look for a new QB.

Not getting canned if Ebron isn't a stud right away. Sorry to burst your bubble it doesn't all ride on his rookie season to judge Mayhew on this pick. Lions can still be successful either way. But it was a good pick because the guy has a ton of potential to be a matchup nightmare down the line and maybe even as a rookie. Moreso as a rookie than Dennard or Fuller.

Nah that's a cop out. He needs to be an impact player now. The team doesn't have the patience to fill the biggest holes in their secondary, so they went with a guy who was a luxury (that's what TE's taken in the first round are). He was drafted to be an immediate impact, and to save Stafford's ass.

A 2nd TE is unnecessary when you have the best WR in the game, great 2nd option, awesome o-line, and two very good catching RBs.

Not unnecessary given Pettigrews limited role. The more weapons the better for every team. This helps depth too if Calvin gets hurt. I think finally we could field an offense without Calvin and given Calvin's age and injury issues recently, this is a good thing. Very necessary. And right now it sounds like you are assuming Ebron will fail or not make an impact. I'd say it's more probable he does make a positive impact. He's very talented and has a great skillset for this offense.

The rookie CB may not have started over Slay/Mathis. Ebron will get a ton of snaps.

who the hell said it was just cause of this pick? you can pick like 30 more things that he did as to why he deserves to be canned. He wasted millions in blowing his wad on Gym Shorts than wanting him fired less than a full year later. Avril mess created divide in the locker room and was brought up by delmas 2 years later when he had to go thru contract negotiations. He sucks ass at drafting which is hard to do when you take on a 0-16 team.....his round 2 blunders are hysterical. His record blows....going into this year most "experts" have us going into the season as the 3rd best team in the division....still. And he has a more proven guy sitting behind him.

so mayhew picked a limited TE in the middle of the 1st round.....so he felt the need to amend that by picking a top 10 TE? fucking brilliant.

Schwartz hire and re-up was the right call at the time. Up and coming DC and lame duck coach that just made the playoffs as a Lion HC.
Avril mess didn't create a divide at all. Avril just underperformed under the tag. It was proper to tag him at the time.
Delmas had an injury issue so of course he wasn't going to get paid. He never mentioned Avril.
Mayhew is very good at drafting, getting free agents and trading. He's been hurt by injuries in Round 2.

Mayhew is a great GM. The Lions have a loaded roster with a ton of winning potential. He's here to stay.

Pettigrew produced. He's an all around TE. Now he got the speedster. It is brilliant (not sarcasm).

So now you admit Pettigrew produced, and Ebron was still a good pick? How many tight ends does this team need? Good lord.

The loaded team Mayhew fielded the last 2 years has had 11 wins.

Injured the last 2 seasons. Secondary for 19 games and WR/TEs for 11 games. Loaded with talent, double digit wins every year starting now.

Yes. The more weapons the better and they have different skillsets.

Slot WR/speed TE was a need. And we got that with Ebron. Fills a need, BPA, provides production right away and depth in case Calvin gets hurt. Great pick.

That's exactly the mindset Millen had. That's probably why Mayhew's first quote was, "I'm a Matt Millen guy."

More weapons, more excitement, yards, weee. That's why Mayhew has a sucky record, he has to be the smartest guy in the room. Rushed that pick up to the commish before they were even on the clock.

He is the smartest guy in the room. Never missed a 1st rounder.

Ebron was a great pick and a need at two positions and BPA. Slay and Mathis have the potential to be a good CB tandem. Ebron is a better prospect than Dennard or Fuller. You take Ebron every time.

Just because you wanted Dennard doesn't make Mayhew wrong. The logic of the Ebron pick is pretty easy to follow. You choose to ignore it.

Really? Jahvid wasn't a miss? Stafford hasn't won anything.

How about past the 1st round? Spievey, Young, LeShore, Broyles, Bentley, what are those guys up to these days?

Jahvid was a good pick at the time. And technically it was the use of a 2nd round pick to get the extra 1st.

Broyles/Bentley have one more year to judge.

Young got a concussion and it caused his insanity. Produced as a rookie. Right pick at the time too.

Like Fox did.

I'm curious if we always seem to have injuries why is 2014 going to be different..?
