Training Camp MEGA thread

That was a great play by Levy with pressure. I didn't say the Leonard Johnson pick 6 was a gift.

And the 2012 game we got beat down. We were missing Burleson, Young, Broyles and Pettigrew and Best. Things change with better weaons. Can't wait until we play Arizona this year.

Stafford was in a giving mood...giving pick sixes out like candy on Halloween!

This is all I needed to see, and it's highly accurate.

I know the Lions players don't believe what I'm about to say, but I don't want to see the "aww shucks, we just need to be luckier next time" mentality.

Stafford should be cutting down on interceptions that were his fault, players should cut down on drops, the defense should cut down on miscommunication resulting in blown coverage, and I don't care if it's a blizzard outside, secure the football better....oh and crush teams to the point where bad officiating calls don't matter.

These are things the Lions need to do if they want to contend for a championship. I'm sure you agree.

Hard to crush teams when you have 34 turnovers. That leveled the playing field for the opponents IMO. Lions with reduced turnovers would crush a ton of teams. And the fact that the Lions won 7 and were damn close despite all those turnovers, shows you how good of a team they really are.

good teams don't turn the ball over 34 times!

Lions are making the mistakes, whether you classify it as the QB fault, WR or OLB..we made those. Whether you call it bad luck or not, we made them. We lost because of them. We weren't good because of them. We won 11 games in two years because of them..

The other team didn't make us drop 2.78 passes a game. The other team didn't make Durham throw the ball back in bounds..

If they outplay the opponent, yes they are still a good team. Bush is still a good player despite his fumbles. Scheme was somewhat predictable. Weapons had alot of backups getting playing time. Still a good team.

Coaching, Ebron and Tate, the turnovers should be fixed.

The other teams got lucky we did that because we still beat 7 of them and outplayed most of the other 9. They got more than turnovers to get those wins. Ref help and Lions injuries too. All those combined put 9 losses on the board.

Welcome to the NFL. Injuries, bad calls, it's all part of the package. There were plenty of teams that had to deal with SUBSTANTIALLY more injuries than the Lions.

Green Bay lost their star QB, who is pretty much equal to the entire Lions franchise for the majority of the year. Still got it done.

Green Bay went 2-5-1 without him beating an incredibly injured Falcons and Cowboys team too. Speaking if gifts, Romo to the Packers defense that day. If that's getting it done then what is the Lions 2-6 finish. Lions got it done with 2 wins in the last 8 too. And Green Bay had a game lead with Rodgers over the Lions.

If the Lions had a schedule like the Packers playing injured team after injured team, the Lions would have won 10-11 games.

Nobody in the NFC North "got it done" last year

at Steelers, at Eagles, Ravens, Giants, at Packers Week 5, at Vikings. Those teams were healthier than Detroit.

Injuries are still the Lions. Maybe Mayhew shouldn't draft players with broken bones or broken heads.

The refs, lol.

Houston hamstring and toe were new. Burleson freak car accident. Pettigrew usually healthy missed last 2 after big hit in Ravens game. Calvin most injured I have ever seen. Waddle elbow was new. Bush knee is new issue. Quin missed half and usually misses no time. Ansah was a new issue early in the 2.5 he missed, shoulder was known playing hurt last 4.

Jones and Broyles you could see but some players recover from surgeries and do just fine. Bentley got hit by Delmas and had a new knee injury earlier.

You always seem to bring up the 2 games someone missed or 1/2 game etc. But fail to mention the 4th quarter numbers by our QB or the times we had the lead and our defense couldn't make a stop.

you are describing every team in the NFL!

I just stumbled upon this while searching for NFL injury stats.

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2014/2013-adjusted-games-lost

Football Outsiders put together this "Adjusted Games Lost (AGL)" count. It's basically a value assigned based on injuries that prevent play, injuries that hinder play, and replacement performance for injured players. A low value is good and indicates that a team did not have many injuries or injuries didn't have a big impact on the team. A high value is the opposite.

How they describe it

Injuries are an unfortunate part of the game, but those teams overcame some big ones to make it to the final four in 2013. There were of course many more injuries suffered along the way, and the severity and duration can vary greatly. Sometimes the player makes it back in time, while some teams have to prep a third starter after the backup gets injured as well.

With Football Outsiders' Adjusted Games Lost (AGL) metric, we are able to quantify how much teams were affected by injuries based on two principles: (1) Injuries to starters, injury replacements and important situational reserves matter more than injuries to bench warmers; and (2) Injured players who do take the field are usually playing with reduced ability, which is why Adjusted Games Lost is based not strictly on whether the player is active for the game or not, but instead is based on the player's listed status that week (IR/PUP, out, doubtful, questionable or probable).

As long as NFL teams are solely responsible for producing weekly injury reports, we cannot say that every single injury has been accounted for, but secrecy is an unavoidable aspect of this side of the game.

Ranking from lowest to highest
In 2013, the Lions ended up with a scores of 64.5 putting them 15th in the league, middle of the pack as far as injuries go.

Top 3 were KC, Philly, and Cincinnati
Bottom 3 were NYG, Indy, and GB

How the Lions compared to the rest of the North
Minnesota 55.4
Chicago 62.6
Detroit 64.5
Green Bay 104.5

As far team units go (offense/defense), the Lions were neither in the top 8 nor bottom 8.

As far as individual positions (? = neither top 8 nor bottom 8)
QB 0.0 (top 8)
RB ?
WR 19.0 (bottom 8)
TE ?
OL ?
DL 18.5 (bottom 8)
LB 0.9 (top 8)
DB ?

Yeah I think that stat was mentioned on a previous thread (if I remembered, I could have saved you the trouble). Injuries are not a viable excuse to explain away the failure of last season.

Stafford did fine in the 4th. Pittsburgh drop city and Ravens late TD screwed by miracle FG. Tampa made a game winning throw too but Calvin dropped it.

Concentrated injuries are worth more. And Calvin was huge. 7 to 10 wins just from Calvin injury.

And it matters game by game. Who is healtheir that day. 6 times in losses it wasn't the Lions.

The dude missed two games. That's 1/8th of the season. If you can't recover from that, you don't belong in the playoffs.

Everyone plays hurt. If you are in the game, you need to produce. It's vicious, but that's the NFL. Ask some of the guys in the NHL what they play through.
