#2 WR: draft
#3 WR: free agency (more likely, maybe Eddie Royal) or draft
TE: need can be filled by resigning Pettigrew (Michael Williams will be our blocking TE, he was on IR all year)
RT: Waddle proved he can be the RT for the future. We should look for a backup Tackle (draft or free agency: backup tackles come pretty cheap)
C: like you've mentioned in the draft thread, we can get a center in round 4 or later
DE: we currently have Ansah, Taylor, Jason Jones. We should add one veteran (free agency: won't be too expensive)
OLB: stay with Ashlee Palmer or free agency or draft: will be inexpensive (Palmer is due 1.25 million in 2014)
CB: draft one and either Slay or Houston should be our other starter, with Bentley in the slot
Safety: get Delmas to accept a pay cut or get rid of him (I'm more in favor of this) and probably sign someone relatively cheap in free agency unless there are starter-ready safeties in the draft (I haven't researched this)

If we switch to a 3-4, we're dumb. In this case, we'd have holes everywhere. In terms of Suh, we should have that figured out before free agency. Hopefully we'll extend him this offseason.

perfect! Do you need a job.....cause mayhew will probably only figure like half of this out. Don't believe me? See the 2012 offseason where we picked a #4 slot wr in rd 2 instead of filling our team out. Only thing I didn't agree with you on is delmas. I think we need to move on at this point. Guy doesn't even practice and it shows....guy is always out of position. Hes a hindrance to our already shitty secondary.

Sorry that I didn't make it clear enough on my point about Delmas. This is what I said, "get Delmas to accept a pay cut or get rid of him (I'm more in favor of this) and probably sign someone relatively cheap in free agency unless there are starter-ready safeties in the draft (I haven't researched this)"

So I agree that Delmas should go because of the points you just listed. I guess all I wanted to show is that with a solid offseason (which I detailed) it would be possible for us to make a run. I'm not saying Mayhew will do that, but I'm just saying the holes we have can be filled in one offseason. But in order to be a perennial playoff contender, we'd have to continue to make good offseason choices in the draft and free agency.

Lastly, if Stafford doesn't improve, then we won't be able to make a run in the playoffs. But I'm almost positive a new coach and better WRs will get him to at least cut down on his turnovers, which makes a big difference.

I agree, sorry Mitch. This would f' everything up. This is the problem with Mayhew locking in on the Wiz and giving him the keys to the kingdom. I'd rather have Zimmer and a solid #2 wideout than switch.

interesting we asked to speak with gruden and not zimmer. WOnder if gruden hire would include zimmer coming along as asst head coach and DC. think zimmer is more loyal to marv lewis or we could pry him away?

If the team was as ready to make a run as LKP thinks.....and the only thing that was holding us back was good qb play. Then the franchise would be smart to draft a qb at 10 like Bortles that you could groom for a couple years under Stafford incase he continues to fail. But were not going to do that....and why aren't we going to do that? Cause the team isn't nearly as ready to compete as LKP thinks we are. We have holes everywhere and needs in important areas like CB and WR that will be addressed before a back up qb.

Tony Dungy thinks we're ready and so do a lot of the experts.

Holes everywhere? lol...you're completely fucked. Holes at WR and DB. Would love one more playmaker at LB. We're set at every other position.

It's definitely interesting to think about. I have no idea about Zimmer's loyalties, but he has a pretty good defense right now with the Bengals. I'm not sure he'd want to come to the Lions even if we have Suh, Fairley, and Ansah. But if Zimmer is good friends with Gruden, who knows.

Not to sound like a homer, but if a handful of those drops are catches this past seasons, the Lions could've been 9-7 or 10-6. A #2 WR would probably give the biggest year 1 impact out of any position on this team in particular. A receiver who can get open and hold onto the ball will make the offense even better, someone who's actually a threat opposite of CJ. It's something they lacked this past season. Burleson was injured for half the season and didn't have much impact coming back. Durham/Edward/Ogletree/Insertscrub are garbage and probably shouldn't be near an NFL roster.

Drops mean nothing apparently. LEADING the league in them too mean jackshit too. Cmon bro!!

I don't know if you continued reading after Hughes post that your post responded to, but we already came to an agreement a few comments later. It's possible to fill our holes this offseason, but we're not sure if Mayhew is up to the challenge. I hope he is, but there's no guarantee.

Mayhew has done well with acquiring players through the draft and FA. Want proof? Every major sports outlet like NFLN, ESPN, or almost every expert says the Lions HC vacancy is a dream job and most championship ready. Thats because of Mayhew getting players he wanted. He's not going to hit on all but he's hit on majority. Only a few holes, thats on Mayhew. Now its time for a ballsy HC to get the most out of these guys because the talent is there.

And we have Xanders

Hell yeah Tony. We can all agree on that.

If Mayhew has done well, all the experts think we're ready then why did we win only 7 games a year after we win only 4? Was all that on Shorts and the other coaches..? Oh, and about the easiest schedule in the history of the world.

I agree that he's definitely increased the talent level to make us the most desirable coaching option available. I don't know if I'd call it a "dream job," but we definitely have some good talent. But like I listed several comments earlier on this thread, we do have some holes still. We need a #2 and #3 WR, a better CB, etc... I listed them in that previous thread. If we take care of those holes, hire a good coach, and Stafford is able to take it to the next level, I think we can make a run.

Hey, dont shoot the messenger. The talent is there. Everybody knows it, now you gotta get a HC who can tap it.

Agreed. Maybe "dream job" was jumping the gun a bit ;) . Its a great opportunity for a HC to come in and not have to worry about dtafting a franchise QB, a franchise LT and some key pieces on defense. You couldnt ask for a better situation via player personnel

Really talented players who produce also turned it over. Solid d not making one more play. No best and Delmas in 2012 plus even worse turnovers and special teams and de play in 2012. Mayhew was in cap hell and did all he could to keep the previous playoff team together in 2012. Resigning tulloch Backus hill and levy and Sammie lee hill was much needed. Reiff and Bentley were much needed. Broyles could have been used but has terrible injury luck. And avril at the time is not someone you want to lose. Then he decided to be an average pass rusher really in 2012 only in the last 4 years. Best participated in all otas and Delmas only plays 16 with a bonus involved and no practice. Bush wasn't available in 2012. Hell even drayton Florence is doing well in Carolina now

blah blah blah...ill believe it when I see it. cause right now as mitch said.....this "dream job" is coming off major collapses to finish 4 and 7 win seasons. with a qb in a cushy situation that included a pass happy offense and was the same offense/OC for nealy half a decade and still somehow played worse vs a horrible horrible schedule. Whats his record vs +.500 teams? You are what your record is....were not very good. Most candidates I think would prefer a rebuild where you get to chose your own guy at qb and the benefit of te doubt for a couple years rather than a win now situation with a team that just lost the division to matt Flynn and josh mccown.

Schedule harder than you think. I proved how hot the Giants, Ravens, Steelers and Eagles were. And even the Bucs were playing their best ball of the year. But go ahead and ignore that.

Lions didn't lose to Cutler/McCown or Flynn. 3-0 in those games. Falcons and Cowboys. Now that is an easy schedule for Flynn.

You know who didn't think he proved it? Martin Mayhew when he fired Schwartz's ass. Buh..but.. Martin, LKP said those teams were hot!

Lol.

8-4 Steelers finish, 5-3 Ravens, 9-3 Eagles finish, 7-3 Giants finish. Bucs i midst 4 out of 5 when they played the Lions. They weren't the Weeks 1-4 versions.

That's how I fucking proved it.
