2015 Cap

And Mulhbach won't count extra. Vet min deduction rule. Look that up.

When we signed Mathis last year, he counted 100k extra compared to the guy he replaced on the top 51 list.

Vet min is more than 435000 he will replace

Ok, you're walking into Ford's office and telling him I need signing bonuses of 50 mill for suh and fairley and another $15 mill to two players we already have under contract. Not to mention this OG you want to sign along with prater, oh BTW Mr ford I'll need $8 mil in SB to sign the rookies. Mr Ford I'll will need about 80 mill in SB money...

He's done it before with Calvin and Stafford.

Lions typically spend up to the cap.

Other ways too do it too. Smaller igning bonus this year then option bonus next year to split out the cash payments (they did this with Calvin). Or big roster bonus one year. Plus that is a cost of 40 million that will never have to pony up again. Suh will be here for 6 more years at that point.

It's vet min deduction not just paying vet min. They get 800k- 1million in salary but it only counts on the cap around 400-600k. Meaning you don't lose much extra space. 100K tops.

Look at the netrat spreadsheet. You can see how it's done.

For instance Orlovsky got 850k in cash but only counted 640 k against the cap.

We would be down to 8 million.

You do realize Tate (6 per), Pettigrew (4 per) and Ihedigbo signings were like 6 million last year in cap room.

I'm using your guy, 15.8 less 9 mill is 6.8, fairley 3, which require a nice SB to achieve

He isn't forking out 80 in SB, no way

Veteran Minimum Salary Benefit Rule

When qualified, a player with more than two years of NFL experience can earn his total minimum salary, but have a cap figure that reflects two years of experience ? or in 2014, $570,000. The contract must be for only one year, and must not contain combined bonus money (signing, roster, workout) that exceeds $65,000.
For instance, Shayne Graham recently re-signed with the New Orleans Saints on a 1 year $955,000 contract. With more than two years of experience (12), and a 1 year contract, Graham qualfies for the cap hit benefit. His 2014 cap figure will be $570,000 in New Orleans.
Had he received a signing bonus of the maximum $65,000, he would have received a $1.02 million contract, with a $955,000 base salary, a $65,000 signing bonus, and a cap figure of $635,000 (570+65).
With plenty of veterans being released, or not signed back thus far in 2014, the use of the Minimum Salary Benefit Rule becomes useful both for older players looking for jobs, and teams looking to minimize their cap dollars.

Lol...ok, any one else on this board thinking Ford will spend 80 mil in just SB..anyone?

The 4 restructures of our players he's spending anyway. Over the course of season in base salary or right away with signing bonus. It is already money out the door.

Suh is worth a big bonus obviously. Same with a good free agent guard or CB.

and like I said there are other options. Option bonus, roster bonus.

Could be 30 million SB and 10 million roster bonus in another year.

Tate got 8 million SB last year on a 6 mil per deal.

30+8+Fairley is do-able.

Draft and restructure money he is spending anyway.

The resturcutres are pre-pays, not paying extra. And all teams do them.

give it in March or give it from Sept-December.

I understand, but we will continue it with staff & cj next year....Reiff and Levy due next year

We have room. Only 101 committed next year plus 4 million for draft plus the 5.3 in restructure money. Even with Suh and Fairley long term and a guard, we can get Reiff and Levy re-signed. Reiff we can give the 5th year option too.

I expect them to give Stafford a new deal next offseason.

You need to do a three year plan to fully understand what your advocating...you're all over the board on throwing money here and there, pay attention to who is up every year...

I'll leave it at this give me 40 mill in SB at I could get you 3 pro bowlers without future issues with restructing..but good debate

I've told you how much would be restructured and moved to 2016 and 2017. 5.3 each year

And i know our committments in 2016 (101) and 2017 (76)

Plus cap continues to rise. And draft picks are much cheaper than they used to be. That's 21 players right there for 2015-2017 drafts.

We can get Suh, Fairley and a guard in free agency. Plus re-sign our own guys like Mathis, Prater etc.

That 40 million in signing bonus is only 8 million in cap space of 2015. We got Tate/Ihedigbo with 4 million of cap space.

We can draft probowlers if we hit like Ansah, Slay, Warford again.

You lose an all pro getting rid of Suh. Fairley is a good player when healthy. Both worth bringing back.

13 in 2017....

And two drafts to come. 14 more players (9 mllion). Suh (16),Fairley (7 million), a guard (4 million). That's 40. Still plenty of room for 11-13 more players. 14 more to a futures deal. 7 million. top 51 rule hit.

That's 140 million. Cap rises. Will have some carryover too.

Oh and cut Tulloch and Bush is 12 million more in room in 2016. Down to 128 millin in room.

Plus a new deal for Stafford before 2016 to change his cap number.

Looks like we can get Reiff and Levy re-signed after all. Probably have room for Slay too but he's signed through 2016. 5th year option for Ansah keeps him a Lion in 2017 too. could use 5th year option on Reiff too and he would be a Lion in 2016. So just Levy to re-sign. Waddle restricted free agent.
