Coaching Search Recap

Lions went 4-2 in the division under Schwartz/Linehan with 2 losses without Calvin (the main talent). They have the talent to compete in this division. Bears 2-4 with a miracle win aganist Vikings Week 2 and beating Rodgerless Green Bay. Week 17 and one Lions game at Chicago was close though.

The real question is do the Lions have the talent to win at New England, at Carolina, home versus Saints, against Atlanta in London, at Arizona next year, New York Giants (no more pick 6), at New York Jets, Tampa (avoid 6 turnovers) with Lovie now.

Buffalo, Miami, Vikings twice they better win.

4-2 in the division and $2 bucks gets you a dozen donuts. What Mayhew is thinking is what you are thinking/saying above. The honest truth is we haven't won the division in 20 years and didn't win this year with multiple division starters out and a 2 game lead. Mayhew should get a little more Hughes in him and get desperate with the next coaching hire, because conservative playcalling and a few untimely penalties weren't all that did this team in. If the Wiz is that innovator bring him in. If he is Schwartz with a better attitude whoop de do, like I said underwhelmed.

The division was the worst division in football lmao. So saying we can compete in the worst division in football isn't really saying much. Anyone that knows anything about football knew if we made the playoffs this year we would have got stomped just like 2 years ago.

So now it's the worst division in football. That's a good thing for the Lions. Easier to win the division that way.

And you don't know we would have got stomped. If we are playing the what if game or projecting make believe games, I say we replay this season over 9 out of 10 times, with the talent Detroit has, they finish with 10 or 11 wins 9 times. But we'll never know. We have to deal with 7 wins this one time.

Why stop at 11 wins? We could have won 15, 16, we could have went 18-0 and won the Super Bowl. We'll never know.

We won our division games that matter. And we had starters out too. Why do the Packers and Bears get all the excuses for injuries but not the Lions. Lions had a ton including 2 division games without Calvin. Calvin plays those 2 games. Lions win those games, Lions win the division. We can play this game all day.

4-2 division means something positive. Losing to the Bucs and Giants and at Steelers/Eagels also means something negative.

Unless Stafford played at an elite level (better than his 2011 year), we weren't going to make a run in the playoffs with the WRs we had. If we had gotten home field advantage we would've played the 49ers or Saints, neither of whom I think we could've beat.

#2 WR: Sammy Watkins (probably will be gone), or Marqise Lee. One of them will still be available when we pick at #10. This draft is loaded at WR. If we take a CB in the 1st round, there are guys like Jordan Matthews (Vanderbilt) or others who can make an immediate impact. (read through the "One of Our Possible Targets Declares" thread)

Center: Keep Raiola on a veteran minimum contract. Drafting a center in the 4th or later is meant to develop behind Raiola because Raiola had his best year in 2013. Or maybe Leroy Harris (who we picked up from the Titans after the 2012 season and was injured part of this year can step in after Raiola is gone)

CB: Justin Gilbert (Ok. State), Darqueze Dennard (MSU), Ifo Ekpre-Olomu (Oregon).

DE: You honestly think it'll be hard to find a decent vet to play next to Suh and Fairley??? Just this past year we got Jason Jones and Israel Idonije.

golfer....I know youre newer here. But you make valid arguments and try your best to see both sides. That isn't allowed on this board. Ill let it slide for now but you need to pick one and roll with it lol and you need to inject your arguments with less rational thinking. People here typically argue based on myth. Ie..."broyles will be good."

LKP lol....I swear to god you wrote this exact same post at the end of last year. For how much research you do....you need to start seeing reality just a liiiiiiiiitle bit more.

You know how they say, the players take on the personality of their coach? I think this board took on the personality of Schwartz for a while.

Reporter: So do you consider this season a failure

Schwartz: Well when I hear failure I think 'abject failure' was this season an 'abject failure'? I say no.

LKP on his best day couldn't come up with that one.

I've been on here since we moved from the ESPN board, I just haven't posted much til now. I know people tend to argue based on myth. I'm just trying to debunk their myths and get some worthwhile discussion going, rather than just name-calling. Because in my opinion, I'd rather have discussions now about what players the Lions can take get this offseason to get better, than arguing about a season that's done and calling each other stupid.

Those posters are few and far between. I laughed out loud when I heard Schwartz say that. It was ridiculous!

What game? The what if game? They didn't win the division. The Packers did, again. That isn't some fantasy it happened look it up. 4-2 didn't mean shit, when it came down to it Rodgers made the play he needed to win. Our guy tanked. That's it. We need Stafford to be in the same conversation as Rodgers or Wiz to be in the same conversation as one of the games top coaches or were destined for the wild card. That's it, game over.

at Seattle, at Saints, 3-3 division. 5 losses for the Pack right there. Still got Pats,Falcons, Eagles and Panthers at home. Plus 3-3 isn't a given either. 10 wins is not a given in 2014 for the Packers with that defense and Oline.

Rodgers/McCarthy 10 wins.

Since Rodgers took over the only time they have had less than 10 wins was his rookie year and this year where he missed half a dozen games.

The only time we had 10 wins was when Stafford played like Rodgers. If Mayhew is going all in on Stafford by hiring the quarterback wisperer. I'm okay with that. I certainly have no faith in him finding and hiring an innovator like Trestman.

Wasnt his rookie year, it was his 4th year in the league.

He never played that tough of schedule in 2009-2012. 2009 Bears and Lions were much worse and AFC North/NFC West (sucked that year). 2010 Lions/Bears/Vikings not as good plus Stafford out, plus AFC East(only Pats good) and NFC East (mediocre). 2011 Lions good, Bears mediocre Vikings sucked, AFC West blew chunks and NFC South had two tough teams. Finally 2012 NFC North tougher but not 2013/2014 good, NFC West 2 tough teams(which Pack lost) and AFC South (sucked and Pack lost to Indy but killed Houston).

Very tough at Seattle and at Saints(places where GB usually loses) and this division is tougher than ever. 3 divsions wins is not some crazy notion for them as well as losing at Seattle or Saints.

That leaves Pats, Panthers, Eagles, Jets, at Tampa, at Miami, Atlanta, at Buffalo. 2 losses out of all those games is not a crazy notion either. That is 6-2 by the way.

If the draft was as easy as you make it sound there wouldn't ever be a bust.
So going into next year, if our stud #2 WR gets injured or doesnt perform we are esentially a team that won't make the playoffs? Our season hinges that much on a #2 WR?

Great QBs make the #2 and #3 WR what they are. There is a reason why Eric Decker suddenly became a very very good WR once Manning got there. It isn't because he magically gained an immense amount of talent.

Decker is like a 40 catch wr on this team.

Tebow to Peyton is opposite ends of the spectrum. Decker had 600 yards and 8 TDs with Tebow. The talent was always there. Peyton allowed him to showcase his talents.

But also look at Denver, good year in 2012 with just D Thomas, Decker and decent run game (McGahee 4.4 YPC, Moreno 3.8 YPC). 2013 Add Welker(over Brandon Stokely) and J. Thomas(over Tamme and Dreesen) and better run game(better year Moreno in 2013 plus Montee Ball), made it a record setting offense. Adding weapons helps even people like Peyton. Especially of 3 of them. And you should never stop wanting to add weapons. They are not going to change QBs. Only thing left is coaching and number 2 and number 3 WR. We'll see on TE. The redzone TE threat is there with Fauria.

No, because we'll get a better #3 WR too. I didn't say we wouldn't make the playoffs. I said we wouldn't make a run (win 2-4 games) in the playoffs without a good #2 WR. Tom Brady is an elite QB and he even struggled this year until he got Gronk and Edleman back.

Stafford isn't a great QB right now. He doesn't necessarily have to be. We need him to at least be above average, which I think hiring a guy like Whisenhunt would do. Decker is 100x better than Durham. If you think they're even close you're crazy. Ask anyone on this board to compare Decker and Durham and you'd get laughed at.
