Major League Baseball has postponed spring training games through March 5. Which was obvious, of course, but it's now official as the league prepares to start meeting with the MLB Players Association on Monday as collective-bargaining negotiations finally start to ramp up.

Major League Baseball withdrew its proposal asking the union to allow MLB control/ability to reduce minor league roster sizes. MLB also withdrew its proposal limiting the number of times a player can be optioned to 5. (Right now, MLB doesn?t have a proposed limit).

Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you still going into offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom calls ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s hot topic.
The continued lockout by MLB owners could potentially cause several problems related to the development of players.

Both issues are tied to spring training.

If the Tigers? time in Florida is shortened, players may not have enough opportunities to properly get conditioned. With the Covid-shortened year, we saw a rash of injuries throughout MLB that were linked to them not having enough time to get ready for the season.

The second issue concerns players on the 40-man roster, which includes prospects who hope to make the roster this year or in the near future. Due to lockout rules, they cannot use team facilities or be in contact with managers and coaches. They also cannot be allowed to join their minor league facility and train/play with them.

A delayed/shortened spring training will give them fewer opportunities to show their MLB manager what they are capable of doing for the team.

For your own analysis, here is the official 40-man roster for the Tigers:

https://www.mlb.com/tigers/roster/40-man

The prospects on this roster are in limbo until a new CBA is signed. The inherent risk is that they may fall behind in their development.

As it regards the Tigers, which of these 2 scenarios would be worse for the development and future performance of the team?

If spring training is shortened, which scenario would be worse for the Tigers' development and future?

1. Increased risk of injury to players.

2. Less development of prospects on 40-man roster.

On minimum salary that MLBPA proposed today: First year of the CBA remains $775,000. Each subsequent year, it goes up by $30,000 now, instead of $25,000 previously. So it?s now:

2022: 775k
2023: 805k
2024: 835k
2025: 865k
2026: 895k

sounds bad..but its not bad..my rough guess that costs 0.4M per team..and covers 47% of players..small cost..huge impact..now thats a very rough guestimate..don't ya think that issue help more players than any other

MLB is clear on this point: If there isn?t a deal by Monday, games will be cancelled and will not be made up. The season will be less than 162 games and players will not be paid for a full season, no matter what.

Guess what evil owners it?s been your plan to punt April since last Nov.. don?t blame the players.

During 26 yr of MLB labor peace, every other major US sports league saw lockouts:
? NFL (March 12-July 25 2011) - Games lost (1)
? NBA (July 1-Dec 8 2011) Games lost (16)
? NHL (Sept 16 ?04-July 22 ?05) games lost (entire season); (Sept 15 ?12-Jan 6 ?13) games lost (34)

So, on the face of it (with NFL exception as they only lost the HOF game), all leagues lost reg season games, especially the NHL. None of this is good for fans, although you can argue the NHL is now in a better place. MLB seems very different.

MLB fans seem acutely aware of history. With that, the ?94-?95 strike still is painful. Couple that with the fact that baseball isn?t in the same space it was back then; it?s no longer the National Pastime. Its current trajectory has not been great, at least on the field.

Core fans will say they don?t care about pace. But it your job is to grow the game, then last few seasons have not drawn in a lot of new ones. Ks are up. Hitting for avg is down. Use of openers sees increased bullpen use which slows pace.

When you?re at the ballpark, pace matters little. You?re invested. You?re likely in a social setting and settled in. At home, pace is everything.

MLB and the MLBPA are slugging it out over core economics with the concepts of growing the game still an open question.

Manfred can unilaterally implement change to quicken pace but has to give 1 yr notice to the players to do so. That means we?d come out of the lockout in the same place we already are. And let?s be honest, it?s a 99.9% chance we lose reg season games. Not good for fans.
