Stafford Tops Sporting News' Overrated QB List

Does anyone even rate Stafford high enough to qualify him for being over rated?

No. That's why the article is flawed.

He's ranked around 11th-15th best QB in the league. If that's overrating someone then someone needs their head bounced off the pavement.

Someone who is drafted #1 and is paid an inordinate amount of money falling in the 11th-15th spot=overrated. Sure, he's better than Jay Cutler. But he needs to be great. And he's not.

Not saying he's bad, but he is what is he. He's slightly better than meh.

No, that doesn't mean overrated. Are you slow?? That's not what the article is saying.

"He's a quarterback who was the #1 overall pick, has been paid a ton of money, has Calvin Johnson to throw to, has thrown a ton of hideous interceptions..." etc so on and so forth.

Oops, that's EXACTLY what the article is saying. I just quoted it. Bro ;)

He's an average QB. And in the context of what he SHOULD be, then yes, he's overrated. If he was drafted in the 3rd-5th round and was making a few million a year, then he'd be rated just fine/underrated.

But that's what has happened to most fans in this city. We have been beaten up over the head with this shitty team that someone in the top 15 is good to us.

Love how they throw Cam Newton in the write up like he's been done wrong over Stafford. lol. Too funny. Not sure what Panther fans have to say about Cam, but Stafford is crucified by fans and the media constantly. Everybody think he's coddled? Ok, what other choices did Detroit have? Of course he's never going to sit. Look at the garbage behind Staff all these years.
As for Newton. He's predicted to be the best every year. He's loved an adored by the NFLN everytime I put it on lol. Same guy who acts like a fkn baby on the sideline and in his interviews. Give me a break..

Quote it all you want..lol. They`re not calling him overrated because of the money situation. they`re calling him that because they`re saying he`s been on easy street with this organization. Which is bullshit because, who else we got? It`s a joke really. You can`t sit him.
Stafford is not even close to being overrated.

Out of 32 teams I`ll take a top 15 QB. You`re a fkn idiot if not.

Haha you crack me up.

"That's not the article was saying."
Um, I quoted it verbatim.
"Quote it all you want."

Course you would. You are okay with Stafford being average.

Holy f'ing shit, who said I want to sit him? Enough with the straw arguments. If he doesn't take this team to the playoffs, it's time to draft someone else and pressure his ass. They've given him enough, and he hasn't won a playoff game. The people that deny that just can't accept that MAYBE, just MAYBE, our savior overall #1 draft pick from Georgia just isn't that good. It happens.

I really haven't seen him crucified in the media often, for sure not constantly.

Just because we have shit after him does not make him less of an average at best QB. We have no choices behind him because the management over rated him and decided he was the one for the foreseeable future. He has yet to prove he is anything close to an elite QB that he was drafted and paid to be.

Without question he was overrated coming out of college. He was expected to be elite, he has failed at that.

Who would you put as more overrated? Someone needs to be the most.

What's the goal, to make the playoffs every few years and be one and done? Yep you can have a near top 15 QB and get that. Glad you are happy with that.

How can you be overrated when he isn't even elite? He's a slightly better than average QB. Been saying it for years. The article is a joke...lol

If I had to guess it's because there are others out there, in the NFL (not players), that think he's better than what he is. They see the arm and the yards etc.

Can't have an overrated list without others saying he's great. With that being said, I agree the article is a joke.

The article is trying to paint the picture that Stafford gets no slack from media, Detroit....anywhere, for being what he is.....A mediocre qb that was taken with the number 1 pick. They compare it to cam newton cause cam newton gets destroyed for not winning. I agree with the article on that fact. We ALWAYS make excuses for Stafford. Even when ppl like jaworski try to rate him low and criticize Stafford everyone freaks out on jaworski eventhough he was absolutely right. Its probably because the lions organization has sucked for so long that we have to immortalize and embrace the average. But the bottom line is hes overpaid and was taken too high (do we really need to get into the value argument again?) to be an andy Dalton.

Of course i'm ok with it!! He's a good QB and that's what he needs to be. Do I want him to be as good as Rodgers? Of course I do, but he's not. Guys like you beat yourself up over it lol. It's pretty funny actually. He's still young and he's improving. Defense is finally stepping up and it looks like the weapons are in place. No more excuses.

How many times are you going to contradict yourself? If you're saying he was already overrated, then how the fuck do you "expect" him to be elite? Try again. I'll buy into that the Lions maybe reached for him at #1, but they had no choice. Now in no way anybody should have thought he was going to be a superstar just because he went #1. We had to go after a QB and he was the only option.

And he gets bashed in the media daily. Especially Detroit radio.

I was meaning he's been overrated since coming out of college. He was expected to be a franchise QB, which you expect with #1. He hasn't progressed a whole lot since coming out of college. His weaknesses are still his weaknesses. Many people view him as middle of the road QB, which is accurate. There are still a number that think he is going to have a break out season every year, those people overrate him.

I don't get the detroit radio, but the media never ask him tough questions in the post game presser or any interviews. It's like they are afraid to upset the QB, they keep giving him passes and smiling as they do. Management refuses to call him out on his short comings and refuse to put pressure on him with decent backup. The guy is way to comfortable in a job he does average to slightly below.

Ok, that makes more sense. I think he's a good QB. He has flaws and weaknesses of course and he seemed to have turned the corner (in my eyes) just slightly last year. And he finally had the proper coaching behind him last year. Years prior he had like a strength and conditioning coach, the nutritional advisor and the water boy as coaches lol.
And you keep saying he's coddled, babied or whatever. What do you expect people to say to him? And who do you think they should have picked up or even drafted to ummmm "push him" if you will? He's the QB of the Lions. He doesn't get in trouble, he seems like he wants to win and he's young. He's not in his 30's, he doesn't beed to be pushed to get better. I saw him get better as a QB and a leader last year. You guys laugh at me when i used the word "growth" in describing his year last year, but that's what i saw. He was a huge part of their success last season.

"He doesn't get in trouble, he seems like he wants to win, and he's young."

Are we describing a walk-on for a college basketball game? What other adjectives do people use for average players? Hustles hard, brings the intangibles, etc...

Tony, just because they drafted him doesn't mean they married the franchise to him. If he does poorly this year, time to look elsewhere and start to move forward. It's okay to admit that the guy just might not be the right fit after seven years. It happens in every sport.

They were not riddled with important injuries. In fact, the backups at RT and ILB were better than the old starters they had. Bulaga>Taushcer and Bishop>old Barnett. So they caught a break with those injuries.

see...backups can take the place of starters and have success. That is what happens when you have a good GM that does well in the draft. You continue to prove Thompson >>> Mayhew!

I think they are basing it on perception around the league and by fans in general. Most of us know he is in that mid range of QBs which is backed up by his actual stats. I think that perception around the NFL and boneheaded fans is that he is a top NFL QB.

Cry all you want about it, buddy. He's not going anywhere. But keep your fingers crossed lol. And it's ok for you to admit that he is the right guy. He's had junk for most of his career here. The pieces are starting to fall in place now.....stay tuned.
