Tigers 2023-2024 Offseason: Trades, Free Agents, Call ups, Rule 5, tender, non-tender

I agree 100%. I was reading an article and that was a main point. The Tigers need some veterans that are inning eaters. He isn't that.
That's what you get for 12m a year. If he was a 200 inning guy he'd be getting paid much more..

Btw, Maeda was projected to get 2 yr 36 mil deal before free agency.

I wasn't talking about a 200 inning guy, those are few and far between anymore (only 5 pitchers had 200 or more in 2023). But more than 105! Maybe somewhere in the middle...a guy you can "expect" to throw 150.

For a reference, Lorenzen and Rodriguez both pitched 153

I think Maeda was coming off TJ surgery the previous year '22. Yep.

If he can build up and give 140 to 150 tops he will be good.

Look at Mize and Manning, 10/11 years younger and.....

https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mizeca01.shtml one year 150

https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mannima02.shtml not even 100

He only pitched 106 in 2021, the year before he had surgery.

The reason I think the Tigers need an experienced vet that has had a history of being an "innings eater" is because of Manning and Mize.

gotcha, it does look like he could have had another 6-7 starts if he didn't get hurt.

I just can't help but be a little skeptical of a 36 year old pitcher. I really hope that I am wrong and he pitches really well and can eat up a bunch of innings. The Tigers desperately need that...probably more than one.

I agree that it is a risk with a 35/36 year old pitcher.
We hope they can sign another pitcher for 2 years. Anyone of the Imanaga, Lugo, Wacha, group or another who slips my mind.

'Days of Roar' Tigers Podcast: How Kenta Maeda helps Detroit Tigers' starting rotation. 65 minutes.

On this episode: Mark and Evan this week break down the Detroit Tigers signing starting pitcher Kenta Maeda. The guys talk if Maeda is a good fit for the team and how valuable the deal may be for the organization.
Later, the "Days of Roar" duo welcome Nick Pollack of pitcherlist.com to help evaluate the Maeda signing and the starting rotation.

The trio talk if Tarik Skubal is a 2024 Cy Young contender, what to expect from Casey Mize's return and more.

With the winter GM meetings set for this week, Mark and Evan also speculate on some hypothetical trade deals. Is the team in need of Javier B?ez insurance?

TUESDAY TIDBITS.
Totally Tigers

Today, it?s about quick hits ? bits of news that catch my radar during the week as well as connecting the dots re ongoing stories. Even the quirky.

So let?s get to it! Here are the most interesting topics that hit my radar over the past week???..

from the article:

The latest case?

"Carson Kelly.

He is spending the off-season working on both his set-up behind the plate and his swing. Expect to see a different technique when he is catching and a different swing after he finishes his work in the hitting lab."

This scares me a bit. IMO, tweaking one thing is OK. But trying to change both hitting and your defensive technique isn't likely to go well. I relate this to the golf swing (since I'm a golfer)...tweaking or working on one aspect is hard enough, changing multiple things usually doesn't go very well.

That said, not a huge deal. He is just a backup anyway.

I hope one of the adjustments is to stop catching pitches with one knee on the ground when runners are on base.

I don't usually listen to podcasts but I am pretty slow today. I liked what the guest had to say...probably because he has the same opinions about Mize and Manning that I have :)

Brayan Pe?a will be the new Minor League Catching Coordinator of the Detroit Tigers.

In the last 3 seasons (2021-2023) Pe?a served as manager of the West Michigan Whitecaps in the Tigers Class-A advanced.

Now in this new role he will be in charge of developing the organization's catchers, talent evaluation and ensuring that players are prepared to advance to the next level.

Pe?a is the manager of the Cuban professional team of emigrated players that will soon participate in the Intercontinental Series in Colombia at the end of January 2024.

The Detroit Tigers have agreed to terms with RHP Kenta Maeda on a two-year contract worth $24 million.
Maeda will make $14 million in 2024 and $10 million in 2025.
