Trade Rumors Castellanos to Cubs, Greene to Braves - signs with the Reds now Phillies

That was my exact thought when I saw that rotation. They better win or come close to winning the AA championship.... If that's even a thing

It is a thing. They're currently 1 game up in their Eastern League. 60-45.

Yea he's the one Avila said might go right to the big league club , not a bad "throw in " on the deal .

The one thing that scares me that I noticed is he strikes out a ton. Already 106 this season, he had 140 last season and 134 the season before.

Predictably, Tigers and Al Avila make little noise at trade deadline.

Bless You Boys Tigers Blog Podcast Trade Deadline Edition: Goodbye to Nick Castellanos and Shane Greene. 47 minutes.
The BYB staff looks at the week?s new in Tiger baseball and beyond.

Today we welcome in BYB prospect writer and draft guru Jay Markle in the aftermath of a modest but productive day for the Tigers? organization. GM Al Avila didn?t find the deal he needed for Matt Boyd, but did a decent job collecting some pieces to add to the organization. The Tigers weren?t fancy, or particularly aggressive, but results are what matter.

We would?ve liked more from the Braves for closer Shane Greene as he was probably the most valuable reliever traded over the past week. There are some minor injury concerns and a velocity dip with LHP Joey Wentz, though he?s also a very nice pitching prospect, and still quite young. But the other player in the deal is kind of a throw-in.

On the other hand, by taking a couple of solid project arms from the Chicago Cubs for Nick Castellanos, the Tigers played to their stronger side in player development and continue to gather a talented and deep crop of pitchers into the farm system. I think the reviews on the return for a rental player with a really limited market have rightly been pretty positive. There is plenty to criticize in the way things have played out with Castellanos, but at this point they probably did as well as was possible.

We?ll chat about the Tigers moves, the move they didn?t make, and take a look at a hectic but somewhat unsatisfying trading deadline.

he was available during the past 2 rule 5 drafts and went un-picked. That says a lot. Of course, it doesn't mean he can't contribute. We have seen guys on the scrap heap turn things around in the past...it just doesn't happen too often.

Just came in to post this. He's having a breakout season. 750+ games in the minors, less than 100 at AAA. Career .244 hitter but at least he walks at a 9.5% clip. He's got upside and can hit for some decent power. I don't know anything about his defense other than he's played a lot of positions but OF exclusively at AAA.

I just read that he has played exclusively in the OF since 2017 but his original scouting report said he was a plus defender with very good range at 2B.

20 percent of prospects acquired at the trade deadline play an average of two years in the MLB. Source: 97.1 the ticket text. Teams parts with prospects for reasons other than getting something in return. The Tigers are playing whist on the Titanic this season, so whatever AA did with his deal will not matter much, in the future, IMO.

It just feels like a lite package of players for Greene and Castellanos. I guess the market just wasn’t that great. It just feels to me like we should have gotten more.

Here are the standings of that league. Only 3 of the 12 teams are over .500 in the second half of the season. Erie didn?t win the first half of the season so I think they need to win the second half to make the playoffs. I looked over the playoff procedures and didn?t see any wildcard type stuff. It?s just first half winners verses second half winners and if the same team wins both halves they give it to the second place team. Someone should check me on that.
Sadly the two best teams are in Erie?s divisions (30-11), and Bowie (29-11). Both first half winners are currently under .500 ,and not in first place. Sure would be nice to see them in the post season.

Nice to see one minor league team doing something because Toledo (48-61), and
West Michigan (35-72) are both pretty awful.
Thanks DD and Avila for this mess!

Freep has an article with quotes about all 4 players from 3 or 4 different scouts. It's a really depressing read.

Basically, we got two pitchers whose upside is maybe 5th starter/ middle reliever. Another pitcher whose upside is maybe middle reliever. And a hitter who is as bad or worse than Castellanos in the field, strikes out a lot, and can barely hit .230 in the minors.

So the Farm system on paper got a little stronger, but it really seems outside 2 or 3 prospects, we have a system full of pitchers who's ceiling is 5th starter/middle reliever in the majors. And the 1 common theme throughout the organization is hitters who struggle to make contact.

Oh well, it's not like Greene and Castellanos were studs.

I have read that the two better pitchers have upsides of #3 or #4, the 3rd destined to be a reliever. I haven't heard anything about the defense of the 4th guy. My guess is he is a utility player at best.

FYI...when I hear "upside" I take that as best case scenario.

edit

fwiw...I doubt any of these guys become a regular for the team. But 2 are considered quality arms who could be packaged in the next few years.

Castellanos = Lange + Richan. Lange is a nobody and most likely won't amount to anything (high walk rate). Richan has huge upside and was just drafted last year in the 2nd round.

Greene = Wentz + Demeritte.

Wentz
2017 Away = 3.99 ERA 1.28 WHIP .665 OPP OPS
2018 Away = 4.09 ERA 1.39 WHIP .663 OPP OPS
2019 Away = 6.99 ERA 1.73 WHIP .844 OPP OPS

Demeritte
2017 Away = .202 BAVG .293 OBP .349 SLG .642 OPS
2018 Away = .236 BAVG .331 OBP .472 SLG .802 OPS
2019 Away = .292 BAVG .393 OBP .556 SLG .949 OPS

What those stats for Wentz don't show is that he lost 4-5 mph the last two years dealing with an injury. It's just recently ticked back up.

But it does show the starting point, which isn't too bad, but not great.

Demeritte is showing improvement at each year, mostly do to power up tick.

I wonder why you'd move a plus defender at 2B to the OF?
