Lombarid on Staffords Picks

Reduce the turnovers by 10. Some fumble recovery rate and 3-4 Stafford picks (new coaching).

And get the Slay and Bentely to start picking some balls off. Give me 11 picks from CBs(2 in 2013, both Houston), 11 from safeties and LBs(13 in 2013) and the Lions are going to win a ton of games.

you are going to need some new CBs!

there IS talent there but that talent isn't getting th job done. Bad coaching by a coordinator who should probably never have beena head coach. good corrdinator bad head coach. there are building blocks there. unless you are dalton or Hughes ppl see that. but i feel with THIS coaching staff that is put together we may have something. and if they can get a draft like last year.

There is talent on the team but the problem is it is high end talent and high paid talent. There are too many weak links AND no depth. This is due to shitty drafting. The talent on this team as a whole has .500 talent. With some good drafting and good coaching they can get better. They haven't really shown us much on the draft end and the coaching staff is unproven. We shall wait and see what happens.

so all of our picks last year were busts? if you think any of them are busts your dumber then i though

I didn't say any of them were busts. What I am saying is they need to do better than they have in the past. Also, if you are going to tell someone that they are dumber than you thought you probably shouldn't make 4 mistakes in 5 words!

you pointing that out proves what i'm saying. i left that there intentionally just to see what you'd do and you feel for it hook line and sinker

Slay, Bentley, Green and Greenwood needed time. This is a big year for all 4 of them. I like what I've seen from Green and Greenwood when they actually played. Bentley did much better at nickel in 2013 and Slay did very well his last 2 games. Houston back to 2011/2012 form, lots of young talented CBs on this team already.

One safety is set, the other safety and TE depend on the free agecny.

Set at QB, RB, Oline, WR1,Dline and LB, punter and returner. Great job Mayhew if he gets a number 2 WR and kicker.

at least 2 of those CBs won't be back

Houston may be one of them. a cap casualty unless he restructures

LOL. Houston costs more money to cut. Not going anywhere.

Greenwood and Green are young and have the size the new DC wants. And on cheap contracts. Played well when given the chance.

Just for reference

Houston has a cap number of 4.8MM in 2014, they would lose 400k (5.2MM would count against the cap) if they cut him next season.

The building blocks that are there cost too much and will cost even more to keep longer (suh). Smart people see that (hughes, Dalton). Football people see that (schwartz said it this week). Dumb people are blind to it (alex, lkp). Not to mention your " building block" qb knocked the entire castle over last year.

Playing realist/devil's advocate, I have a few questions for you.
What if Houston doesn't get back to 2011/2012 form? Are you confident that Green or Greenwood can be a good #2 CB in 2014?

How are we set at DE? Ansah should be good if he stays healthy, but do you think Jason Jones or Devin Taylor can beat their 1v1 matchups with any regularity? I like Taylor as a solid backup, but not as a starter in 2014. And who knows what Jones will be like coming back from injury.

Where do you suggest Mayhew gets a great #2 WR? I think Sammy Watkins would fit that need perfectly, but it sounds like he won't make it to us. I don't think Mike Evans or any other WR in the draft is guaranteed to be a great #2 in 2014 and I don't think the Lions have the money to go after a great #2 WR in free agency since they'll need to use that money for other positions like safety, another WR, maybe a DE, etc...

And I'd appreciate if you respond to each of my 3 questions instead of answering one and skipping the rest like you normally do.

The only reason y they can't cut him. Maybe re structure then

Pretty valid remarks IMO. I know these questions weren't addressed at me but I'd like to take a crack.

I am confident our secondary will improve this year just on coaching alone, and I am not counting on Houston for shit. He sucks, he sucked, and he will suck in the future. If they can bring Mathis back that will help, he still has something in the tank. Slay will be a solid starter at least at the #2 CB spot if I had to put my prognosticator hat on.

DE is a huge need. I would be looking at DE at 10 and have said it numerous times in the draft threads. Ealy looks like a natural and I think his stock will rise, 6'5 275 with multiple moves? What's not to like. DE first two rounds.

We can't get a stud #2 outside of Watkins true. But we can get serious upgrades over Blanco Nino and a long in the tooth Burleson. Hughes has posted a half dozen guys that will be available from rounds 2-4 with serious upside. Have to go Pats draft here and take multples at that position because of Mayhew's misses and tendency to miss.

If we went DE DE I might become emotionally erect.

U do realize we have one of CB corps I'm football right?

I agree that our secondary should improve based on the new coaching, but between the D-line, LBs, and secondary, I think secondary will still be our biggest weakness in 2014. I'd be fine bringing back Mathis though and I'm hoping Slay can become a solid starter in his second year.

I think the Lions should be open to taking a DE at 10. I haven't researched anything about Ealy yet, but I'm not sold on Barr, for reasons I've mentioned in the past.

I do think Hughes has posted some guys that can help us. Based on what he's posted, I'd love it if we could get Jordan Matthews in the 2nd round, if he lasts that long. Otherwise, like you mentioned we might have to take several WRs and hope Mayhew hits on one of them.
