Get StartedYeah, he is handcuffed. That's what the Lions do. They fall in love with certain people. Why do you think this organization has been what they are for 50 years? There's no accountability or need for change. It's status quo.
But why do you even need to say that? How about, "Our new GM will evaluate the coaching search and is completely in charge." An owner throwing support behind a coach is going to scare off candidates. It's been pretty well-documented that Martha loves Caldwell.
And we fans are all nervous as a whore in church wondering.
This describes my whole Lions fandom, FO turnover, draft, injuries, games, FA whatever.

I'm with you Dubs. That's our M.O. Could have been cleared up with leaving what has already been said said. This coming out in week 17 has no reason but to bolster Caldwell who rightly should feel in limbo.
There is no handcuff for fuck sakes. You just made up a fucked up scenario in your head because that's what you do! You're delusional..lol. All this is, is a franchise supporting their CURRENT HC and telling the fans they have the new GMs back on any decision. No pressure, no handcuff. Chill the fuck out
Martha has been the team owner less than two years now. How can we tell yet what her M.O. will even be?
It took her a season and a half to shit can a whole bunch of people. That's something her husband never would have done.
I think it may be a great injustice to say this lady is representative of the last 60+ years of ownership. She seems to have her own way of doing shit.
That was my exact first though. You "back the coach" but make it clear you're giving control to the new GM.
The biggest knock in ownership the last forever years is that they're loyal to a fault and intervene when making decisions about hiring/firing upper management.
This says to the public ....."we're giving FULL control to the new GM".....
I'd look at it as a positive if I were the incoming GM.

We can hope can't we?
If you are giving full control to the new GM, why even come out and say you support Jim Caldwell when the season is about over? What benefit does that give?
Sorry Tony. Let me give you this response then. I believe in the current ownership regime and trust that the Detroit Lions will make the right decision regarding the fate of Jim Caldwell.
Forgive me for being skeptical about this joke of an organization when a new GM search is going on and the owner throws in her opinion about how great Caldwell is. I'm putting together some pieces here. And whether or not it happens is one thing. It's my opinion based on the history of this team and their infatuation with certain people.
Why back the coach? What is the purpose of that if you are giving full control to the GM? Why back the coach of a 6-10, 7-9 team with a new GM coming in? Why.
Lets everyone know that he could be fired even WITH the owners backing.
The GM will have total control over all football operations.
That's why.
They already said that. Coming out with this now benefits Caldwell and no one else.
